This morning, June 8th, at approximately 2 AM, near the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Gaviota Ave in North Hills a cyclist was struck and killed. The vehicle involved is a dark colored suv. The vehicle likely has damage to the front of the vehicle, and the windshield. The roof rack definitely sustained damage. The driver fled the scene following the collision and the cyclist was left to die.

What a piece of shit driver to hit someone and leave. To make it worse they see the car in the morning and still dont care enough about human life that they cant turn themselves in. The courthouses hate cyclist anyways cause if the driver does turn himself in, all the courthouse or shitty judge will do is a little slap on the wrist. fucking lame

Wow. I have chills down my spine.
I was at the Hammer last night. I was one of the last people leaving. It was around midnight. I was talking with a guy who was riding back to North Hills. He was a very nice guy. I can't remember his name. I was also one of the first people at the Hammer and so was he. He took a self-portrait of himself and his bicycle using a tripod like thing when he arrived. He was wearing a tie-died shirt that he had done himself with the images of gears from a cassette. I hope it wasn't him. He had panniers on his bicycle.

Here's a news story with a video that shows the bicycle:

I don't think it is the same bicycle as the gentleman I spoke with.

“This bicyclist did all the right things. Unfortunately, this accident occurred. I mean, he had a helmet on, the reflective vest, the bike headlights and things. He was an avid bicyclist that had all the right things on it,” LAPD Capt. Ivan

Additional information now available indicates the suv is dark colored, possibly is dark blue and a mid sized, Chevrolet Blazer or similar type with damage. Keep a sharp eye out for such a vehicle and telephone LAPD with information.
Detective Deaton has been assigned and can be contacted by calling 818.644.8000. If he is not available, then any detective can take the information or call 877.ASK.LAPD (877.275.5273).

"The City Council Friday approved a $50,000 reward for information that helps identify and convict the driver responsible for hitting and killing a cyclist in North Hills earlier this month. Paul Albert Helfen, 76, was struck and killed about 2 a.m. June 8 while riding his bike east on Nordhoff Street near Woodley Avenue. . .
Chris Maloney, Helfen's nephew, described him as an avid cyclist and marathoner. He said his uncle typically rode his bike around 4 a.m., but was restless on the morning of his death."

Also they are now looking for a
2007-2012 Nissan Sentra
instead of an SUV due to debris found at the scene.
