A New, Fast Paced Westside Ride
Thread started by
SFRider at 09.3.08 - 6:44 pm
Just wanted to judge the interest level for a new ride on the Westside I'm thinking, 35+ miles, with a very quick pace, no drinking, no cruisers, people will need to be in decent shape and riding a geared, or fixie/singlespeed roadbike to keep up. There will be regroup locations but only enough time to load up with fluids and a smoke. All are encouraged to come out and push themselves, it will be lots of fun and lots of hard riding. I'm thinking leave from somewhere on Ocean in Santa Monica around 8:30 or 9...return to the same spot with an ever changing route every wednesday. Come out and be a part of the first westside ROOT RUN.
Give me some feedback, so I can judge if there will be enough riders that are up for a new challenging ride with some pretty cool route options

A Cub Camp replacement? Is it time for CC to go on hiatus while the cub leaders take on other projects?

no cub camp replacement, just something different, more laid back but as fast or faster

30-40 miles @ 20mph every week = perfect

I was planning on a wednesday night run, cubcamp does their thing on thursdays and those riders are invited too....just want to get more challenging rides going instead of the party rides, but the night can be altered based upon the response...i'm hoping to have the first one roll out next week

SFR,
I'm all for another quick ride on the Westside. i do know that there is some other things that go on Wednesdays that may reduce the turnout for another ride (even a different style, like yours) We have Den Dinner's ever other Wednesdays and Movie night at BRW alternate Wednesdays but i think your biggest competition might be the Venice Chill ride. Its put on by LA Fixed and rides out from the Venice Circle. Its labeled a chill ride but the last one i jumped on were traveling around 24mph. Don't know if that is the norm or not, but that is a little quicker than a 'chill' ride in my book.
I am curious what the future of Cub Camp Thursdays holds. If they decide to go on hiatus, maybe that could be a better night for you.
Stay tuned.

Mondays are out because of wolfpack, i'm going with wednesday, the venice chill ride is either tuesday or thursday...and i'm assuming i'll be able to get a few riders that want to go fast instead of watching a movie. There are lots of rides on the westside, just not enough fast ones

hmmmms
WP is gud - but der is many ryders who cant do WP cause its too much of a trek to go out there, ryde hard, and come home.
There is a market for riders for Monday that would not be taking people from WP.
Knittens09.3.08 - 7:22 pm
reply
My bad. I thought the Venice ride was on Wednesday. Then Wed. may be a good day. Tuesday's is Taco Tuesday (social ride) so no competition there.
@ knittens:
I didn't say soo many rides, just pointing out that there are other things happening on the west side that can possibly dilute one's ride. That is all. I'm all for competition and giving people options but i also look forward to a good turnout when i put on a ride.
And yes, never say die for Cubbies, but even they need to hibernate once in a while (or ride a bike across the country).

Just post it, stand by it, lose sleep over it, dream and scheme about, have fights over its direction, always keep it fresh, miss meals to make spoke cards, don't stop being creative, spend money on it when needed, live it, throw parties under its name, race under its name, and marry some of the people that show up to it...and keep this up for over a year...and then it won't matter what night you have it.
There has been so many other rides on the Westside come and go and only CubCamp remains. We always keep it fresh, we treat every ride like a work of art, no matter how big or small it may seem.
Cubcamp began as a WP alternative, but very quickly found its own identity. Now, riding hard and fast is only a part of it. So I guess if I have any advice its to be creative and steadfast and things will work out. Best of luck.

ROOOOOT!
I just had a vision of the future...
This ride will begin as a westside wolfpack but the riders will become so strong, so fast, and so daring that the ride will eventually grow into a weekly 3-hour century ride that blasts through the seedy underbelly of orange county before returning to the start with a stack of new phone numbers in the pocket of each and every one of us. Art schools will start calling SFRider to offer us money to ride to their campuses so that students of sculpture and painting can attempt the godly act of recreating our thighs and calves for posterity from blocks of marble and on canvas in preparation for the redecoration of the sistine chapel's ceiling. Surfers all up and down the coast will dread our approach because the gyroscopic disruption of our collective wheel-spinning glory will create tidal shifts that are catastrophic, not only to their day in the water, but to entire generations of sea-life. The leader of the pack will be called Moses because he will break wind so hard for those man enough to stay in his draft that the red sea of smog hovering over the LA area will part so that glorious sunshine and the fresh smell of pure oxygen may grace our streets every thursday morning following the ROOT RUN. Our lungs will be so efficient that the same clean air will be as thin and oxygen deprived as the highest points of the Himalayas and therefore all athletes in the area will experience a weekly boost in their training and the dodgers will win the world series due to their superior fitness, aided by the nutritional benefits of Gogi berries which will suddenly begin to spring up all over the city. We will get bored of riding through orange county every Thursday so we will start pedaling to Phoenix and back alongside bentstrider. Then, one night we'll get bored of that and decide to ride to San Francisco only to get really fucking pissed off when we find out that they won't let us ride the trolly back... so we'll all yoke up and tow the bitch. Then all the bike messengers and wannabes in SF will get really pissed off that we took their trolly and they'll ride down to beat us up but by the time they arrive (on the first saturday after the third friday of the month) they'll find it fully converted into the awesomest CRANK MOBILE evar and they'll wind up smack in the middle of so much EFF YOU ENN that they'll run around trying to sell their city to us for a $2 but we'll all know that money could be better spent on a tall can.

franz09.3.08 - 9:31 pm

I don't want this to be a westside version of the wolfpack, it's going to be the ROOOT Run, nothing more nothing less. I don't want to create a rift amongst cyclists. We're all out on our bikes for the same reasons, have some fun, cause a bit of ruckus, and get a good workout. So let's stay away from stepping on toes and not claim to be a version of something else...We will be an original ride influenced by all that I have ridden with since i've been in LA.
Other than that Undercover hit the nail on the head. Let's go push ourselves and everyone around us that shows up
SFRider09.3.08 - 9:39 pm
reply
The chill part will be the people involved, and the unified goal of bettering ourselves as cyclists. Faster because I like to ride fast, i'm not trying to go faster than anyone except myself on my last ride

My only suggestion is to spend your energies with cubcamp first, it's already there and awesome, if you want to help lead a fast paced ride cubcamp is always looking for people that are interested and committed to riding. There are plenty of riders that regularly show up to cubcamp with the intention of going fast, and if you want to be a part of that then make it happen.
I'm only saying this because it's amazingly hard and frustrating to get something new going, especially with the eccentric and saturated nature of the westside. So, before you turn your back on cubcamp, try it on for a couple weeks.

I'll probably wait a little while before heading up that way again.
Too many fucking weigh stations within 30 miles of each other.
At least when I was driving with Swift, I had a place to park my truck at over in Lathrop.
Rent a car, throw the bike inside and join y'all for a pillagin'!!!
Now Phoenix, y'all can draft behind my truck at 80mph, any day of the week!!

@bentstrider
No need for a rental car. On the night when we visit SF on a whim to ride their trolly (and subsequently tow it back) we'll be pedaling. If you don't want to ride the whole way, Moses and Mr. Rogers ought to be able to tow you on your bike for most of the ride.
re: Phoenix, we'll probably only draft you the first few times while we're still getting to know the roads a bit. It won't be long before we'll be increasing your fuel economy by letting you draft us in neutral for a few miles at a time.

A weekly west side ride that's always fast and long each week would be cool. CC's are good but I'm not down with the slower ones. Tuesday would be my vote. Venice Chill ride on Tuesday doesn't totally conflict because they don't know what they want. One week it's genuinely chill and slow (boring) and other weeks it's really fast. And I think they're pretty set in their group. A ride that's fast and long every week would be bitchin.

I was personally thinking of starting the "High-Desert Hammer-Down", but met gripes from the local road community.
Not to mention that aside from the 5-10 members of that elite, circle-jerk, everyone else rides a cruiser or mtb up here.
So, the name will probably stick, but only due to my alliance with the members of CubCamp and this proposed "Root-Run".
bentstrider09.4.08 - 11:59 am

this ride conflicts with nothing on any day.
We will not carry sticks and will therefore not conflict with polo.
We will not sit down to eat and therefore will not conflict with Den Dinner.
We will not practice passive spectatorship therefore will not conflict with BRW movie night.
"Chilling" will only happen after we've outrun the imaginary nukes about to be dropped on the start point during the imaginary air raid that begins when SFRider says, "GO!" and therefore will not conflict with the Venice Chill Ride.

@ ROOT RUNNERS
Next Wednesday:
Traffic signals will blink unnecessarily and ask, "What are you thinking about?"
Car exhaust pipes will go limp as we pass and parking meters will be heard whispering, "it's okay, that happens to everyone sometimes..."
The streets we ride will be left behind, exhausted and murmuring requests to the sidewalk for a cigarette and a hand towel. "How can you let them treat you like that?" the sidewalk will ask. To which the street will reply, "It's okay. I knew what I was getting into. They're the type to just ROOT and RUN and that's exactly what I was looking for." The sidewalk will continue to judge the street and preach the benefits of the steady stride of pedestrians but, for all it's talk, will find no relief for it's insatiable jealousy.
