Feel My Legs, I'm a Racer hill race (5th year anniversary!) Sunday March 28th, 8am
Meet at Silver Lake Farmers Market at Sunset Blvd / Griffith Park Ave
last year's FAQ, new ones to come.
Hills? Los Angeles? How hard could it be?
Fargo St, one of the steepest paved roads in the world, is only one of ten. Yearly the LA Wheelmen do a hill climb here with lots of hoopla for just riding up this one hill. For you it will only be one. Are the others equally hard? No, but they will feel like it.
Do I have to race?
No. Only a few of the people out there are racing for points. Most are there just to attempt every hill.
I want to race and am totally going to win. How does it work?
Each place, five deep, is worth points starting with 1st place and five points. Each new hill is treated as a separate stage with a group ride between hills.
What does the winner get?
Recognition and bragging rights.
How should I prepare?
Climbing is a unique cycling skill. You may be fast and strong, but being both on these steep climbs requires a lot of training in the hills. This year I want to have a few training rides leading up and will post them at nowhip.blogspot.com.
Why so early?
If you can ride these 10 hills in one morning then you can be out of bed and at the market by 8am. If you show up without having slept I'll buy you a cup of Coffee Cellar coffee at the market. Most of these hills are in quiet neighborhoods with narrow streets. I want us to be in and out with as little impact as possible. The earlier the better.
What should I bring?
Water, some snacks, a tube, the ability to fix minor mechanicals and rain gear. It's rained all three years so far.
How long will this take?
Expect to be out well past noon. We only do about 25 miles, but getting to the hills, getting set up, etc takes longer than you would think.
Do I get a t-shirt and brunch?
In the past we've had one or both, but I can't promise either for 2009. Hopefully we'll have a 'Bryan Farhy Commemorative' vegan brunch somewhere.

Awesome , completed 2nd year... brutal though got that bitchin love shirt. 1st edition T SHIRT is the best, with those bulging calf muscles up front ,hills name on side.. missed that 1st year, but met up for the aftert party @ the A house (if u OG's know). most def will b there..this year.

I did all 10 hills last year and it was the most fun I've had on a bicycle saddle.
It was also one of the hardest days on a bike in my life. Don't be fooled by the short distance of each hill (all are shorter than a half mile each) this takes some serious strength and stamina.

This race is the awesomest! Especially for people like me who don't ride this area much. I really enjoyed seeing some of these great little old neighborhoods and hidden gems of LA. That is, before my vision gets fuzzy and chest starts to heave and the cranks simply don't. turn. over. anymore.
Westside meetup at virginia ave park? crankmob? 6:30?

Cool---but what so hard about going dow . . . ooooooooh, you're going UP the hills. My bad. Not so cool. Think I'll keep my knees for a few more years, tyvm.
Seriously, though, it sounds awesome, but you know who's gonna win. Pro tip: shoot for second!

Spectators definitely welcome by bike, but not by car (I don't want to add to the congestion on these narrow roads plus we're all about promoting car-free alternatives). There are a few 'up and over hills' but I can help spectators get around them or give them a head start so they can watch from good view points. It's definitely a fun ride/race to be at!

50-60 show up. About 8-10 are going for points. 25 or so finish. But the numbers keep getting better each year.

spectators welcome, just no cars. You don't have to ride all of the hills. The ones that are up and over I can give you a headstart (lots of people push their bikes over) or a way around. Lots of spectators each year. Well, not lots, but you know, for something like this any amount feels like a lot.

what time do you imagine this race/ride will end? I want to attend but need to be somewhere by 3:30... so I imagine I need to be back at the farmers market by 1:30-2pm. Will I be cutting it too short?

Ah, no t-shirts. Each one is made only for the specific year and the only way you can get it is by riding that year.
I wanted to do t-shirts, but patches are way way cheaper and I don't want to charge an entry.

Though the meet point is where Silver Lake FM takes place, the FM occurs on Saturday (today), so dont expect to see a bunch of tents and such.

this was by far the most challenging event i've ever done on a bike. Hats off to the organizers for a thrills and chills route across some of the best scenery LA has to offer. I'm truly stoked and look forward to some pics

i had such a great time. that was such a fun ride, even for my pudding legs. i was just proud to have attempted the hills that i did. thanks for a great ride.

Most serious group rides, even Wolfpack and the Dark Century, I can more than hold my own.
This was a humbling experience and really the first time in my life that I was the "old man" bringing up the rear.
That said, I did peak every climb. I suppose there's some salved pride in that!
Now it's gonna take me a week to recover!!

Thanks to everyone who came out and rode! And all of the feedback of course. I really, really love putting this ride on and am so stoked to share it with those who appreciate it.
I'm honored to be around such motivated folks who are willing to come out and ride this.
It really is a group effort and I wouldn't be able to do it with the half of dozen or so people who helped out.
I hope to get a report and photos up soon. Same with Thus Climbed Zarathustra and the WPH Marathon Crash race the wknd before.

Great photos of a great event.
This is a wonderful gift to our bike community every year.
Come out and try a hill or two. You don't have to do all 10, but it's worth it for the bragging rights.
