I am interested to gauge what everyone's knowledge and take on this issue is. What it means to me is that cars are not a going to be a realistic form of transportation sooner than we may think (a matter of months not years) for the vast majority of people.
This is part of the reason I got myself a bike and started riding every day to work, just to do my small part and to show others that it can be done. But now that I ride and I enjoy it so much I wonder why I wasnt riding before since it gives me a sense of tremendous well-being and its the total opposite to the mind-numbing existence of driving a car in traffic.

to JB: did u read the article?
The jist of it is due to the current depletion of elephant sized fields we need to find a new Saudi Arabia every 18 months going forward. Those recent finds in Brazil and Cuba are nowhere near Saudi-sized not to mention they are deep-ocean fields which are taking upwards of a decade to develop and not to mention they are shockingly expensive to develop, needing massive infusions of capital investment, which is the very thing that is currently vanishing from our financial system.
Electric cars might be part of the solution...but think of all the electricity that is needed to power hundreds of millions of personal vehicles, our infrastructure is already stretched and in disrepair. It is not a smooth transition no matter how you slice it

"Without extra investment to raise production"
I'm sure the US (and other) governments won't be throwing money at it, or anything. They tend not to do that, I've noticed.

Peak Oil, whenever it occurs, is inevitable. Cycling promotes self reliance and health, which are reason enough to park the car. Good work....and I welcome the cycle-horde
