Your profile pic... so funny.
Actually this is sort of oriented around fixed gears, so roll the disco bike. Will be a *little* quick for mtb tires. Most people are rolling gears like 46x16, and we just roll a natural pace for that. 15-20 miles, steady pace, take a stop if people want to, keep rolling if not. Not too much in the way of hills, and I try to work in some nice long sections of road where we don't have to stop for a few miles.
No competitiveness. Unless you pass me, in which case I'll curse and sprint like hell until I catch you, and if I do catch you I will say something like "now what, bitch!", and if I don't catch you I will be super pissed and I won't talk to you for the rest of the night.
re: potholes: We just meet in K-town, and then ride out somewhere, preferably on a pothole-lite route. read: we don't ride on Wilshire. I'll fuckin walk my bike on the sidewalk or take the bus before I ride on Wilshire. God I hate that road.
Fuck all this 'splainin. Just come out and ride if you want to on Wed. Should be fun.

We generally do a good job of keeping it together in the beginning, but mostly because I am der routenmeister and I keep that shit secret.

Annie you rule life.
Nah, we don't have a "stick with the pack" philosophy. If I could edit that comment I would. My post came out all wrong: I didn't intend to be critical of anyone, so please please please don't take offense.
What I meant to say is: if anyone felt like they were ditched at the end on that last stretch down Olympic, I apologize because that's not our intention. In the future we'll try to keep at least one of the planning committee rolling the usual 20-whatever speed, for those that don't feel like hitting the gas.
We're still trying to iron out the kinks of hosting a fast ride.
Hope that helps.
But enough of that. Wednesday was a ton of fun and I couldn't be happier with the group and all the positivity. So thank you again to everyone who came out.

Yes, we haz a route!
Also, last week a rider got separated from the group and got nabbed by a cop for running a red light while trying to catch up. Then the cop decided to be a real jerk and issued an additional ticket for no front light. So weak! We thought it would be sporting of us to take up a non-mandatory collection to help the rider fight the ticket. So if you feel like bringing $5, that would be fab.

No no no let me clarify. You must show up no later then 8 min before the set roll out time. Then you must find me out of the crowd, and give me 15 dollars for the gas it took me to get there. The and only then do u have the right to ride for the next month but it will only cost 5 dollars a month after that time. If you break the terms and agreement you are subject to a fee of 38 dollars and a processing fee of 12 dollars. Good luck and see you on the path!

And yes as for the ride, we fell far short of our standards for excellence. Our failure at the Americana was humiliating. The long stops and endless lolligagging were a stain on the figurative diaper of this ride. Next week we will be cracking the whip and we'll have a rad ride and eat somewhere cool. Yeah the elevation tool is all stoopid for some reason. I couldn't get it to work either.
mtb should be fine. I'm going to roll a lower gearing for this, mostly so it's comfortable to roll a slower pace. People are welcome to dart up the hill but I'm going to try to roll towards the back of the group.
Annie, you can come, but I don't want to see you using your big ring going up this hill. Otherwise I'll lock your bike to a tree and make you wait at the bottom. No hurting yourself!
@Justin, last week wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't up to our high standards. It's not like it was as bad as a lil pups ride or anything. ha.
Jakob Z. German is going to be on his new fixed gear. Everyone compliment him. Because I did the build.

i have my eye on a new crankset. what do you think about the andel/kazane/soma hellyer cranks? pretty damn good for ~80 bucks off ebay and gives a true 42mm chainline. 144 bcd and i read some reviews that said they were pretty good. i can't pull the trigger on sugino 75s...my bike doesn't deserve them.
 ktown crawler
ktown crawler06.11.08 - 11:02 am

Chainline is achieved by way of the bottom bracket. A 42mm chainline is dependent on having the right BB spindle length, and that varies per crankset.
As far as the Hellyer, Hell no! Ha, just kidding, I'm sure they're fine, I haven't read any negative reviews. Sugino 75s are overkill for the street anyway. I have Sugino RDs (probably equivalent to the hellyers) on one of my bicycles and I can't tell the difference.

@royalacademy:
I stopped by the Smoke House yesterday when I was done scouting the route and spoke with Lance about the plans to have the Koreatown ride join up. He told me they close up at 9pm, but cyclists doing the ride hang there for drinks after 9pm. So yeah, we might not make it for food, but that's fine, Chinatown has tons of options. Totally. General apologies that grabbing a meal before the Chinatown mosey wasn't better coordinated. It sort of turned into "choose your own adventure" which is not how we normally do it.
But yes I'm not sure how we're going to handle it with the high turnout. Last week it was a miracle that Roscoe's was able to assemble a table for 20 heads on the spot; this week was an even higher turn out.

al!
yeah, it was about 28.5 miles and a little under 1.5 hours with a flat. it was great to ride down there and meet up with the wednesday long beach crew and the oc crew that rode up. it felt like a special night. then we all rode over the bridge to the queen mary, but left after lingering outside the ship for about a minute. perhaps the security guards had issues with us, but we had to leave to catch the last train back up to la. we all packed into one metro car and bought some sour straw candies that this woman was randomly selling.
it was nice to see some of the lafixed originals out on the ktown ride, as well.

Bump for the K-Towners who are drooling about the great food in their neighborhood while complaining about the lack of rides.
Hint: The Forge and Gorge still happens. It's the only reason I got an account on lafixed.

It doesn't really leave until 8. Sometime when you're not studying (does that ever happen?), you should come out. Or wait for HMW, which is always on the horizon...
The Forge and Gorge is my favorite ride in LA. The people are chill, even if the pace is not, and it has thusfar proved immune to Serious Cycling Syndrome, a tragic disease which tends to afflict some of the faster-paced rides (or so I have been told).

yeah 8 is too early. lol But when the semester is over I'll definitely come out. I actually tried this ride once...on my hybrid w/rack and all. needless to say I got dropped. lol. still meets at wilshire/western right?
what is HPW? or HMW? or whatever those initials were that I can't remember right now..

I wish I was coming out, but I'm still searching for a new bike. From the look of the lafixed thread this week, it'll be a pretty small crowd.

you were right nathan, a couple riders showed up, but were obviously scared off by me and the homie.
Oh well I made him a grilled cheese and we're about to blast down to long beach if anyone wants to try to catch us on the river path!!!!!!!!

Oh no - tonight is the last Forge 'n Gorge
ever! It's the end of a K-Town tradition. If you've ever wanted to do this ride, now's your last chance. As in literally, like,
now. 8pm, Wilshire and Western.
