What's the most you have ever spent on a bike? Did it even feel like money well spent?
$2800 is more then I spent for my Jetta. I'm sure it's still a great deal, but can you really justify that kind of cash. I've heard many people say once you get to 105 groupo, the steps up from there aren't really as noticeable as the ones up to 105. I guess I can understand once you reach the pro level or start getting sponsors.

$2800 for a bike that retails at $6000 is quite suspect. Especially when the poster offers no reason for why they're selling it.

That's a good deal if you're a serious triathlete but I'll make fun of you if you take it a on an MR ride.

Or the doctor who bought this loved the way it looked in the store but found out it pretty much sucks for everything except riding fast in a straight line in an aero tuck wearing a onesy, arms tired and dripping wet from an ocean swim.

I spent $1700 on a dual suspension mtn bike and it was worth every penny. I've got a hardtail that I like too but if you're really going to put in serious saddle time, a dual is gentler on the body, and actually climbs better. And you've gotta spend some coin for decent dual s.
Same goes for road bikes, you've gotta spend at least 1k for a nice, fast geared bike. If you can afford it, you don't want components below the 105 or Veloce levels. That generally puts you at 1k, usually more.
On the other hand, my city bike that I take on MR rides cost me $150 and I don't worry a lick about denting it, or having it stolen.

Jezzus...those wheels retail for around the bike's full asking price. Looks sketchy.

I almost snagged a Specialized Ruby Pro on CL for $600 earlier this year. Some rich studio-type off who had ridden the ALC and asked her assistant to, "sell that bike collecting dust in the garage."
(I'm still kicking myself for not driving there immediately after work with cash in hand....)

How tall is your dad?
If he's taller than about 5'3", he may want something larger than a 48cm frame.
