Best ride of my life? Could be any of the Robotz rides. Or maybe swarm the pier 2? Or maybe that one Crank Mob where we went to the Beverly Hilton and let off a bunch of Fireworks. Could be a number of Angelopes rides too. Even that Westside mosey i went on a couple months ago was pretty sick. Ok last one, Fireworks ride like 3 years ago. Wait.. Ahh the Bride ride that Sean led last year... Deng who could say what's the best?..

There were a few crank mobs that stand out when the numbers hit over 1000 and you had to walk down la grange with your bike for a block or 2 since there were so many people on the roll out.
RWNN first beyond and back is one of my favorites...i wonder why.....
Tarsis' ride last year was really great with the tea party stop...
some of the sins n sprockets 2008 rides are still my favorites.

Tour De Hoods... from NoHo to LBC.... I was out of shape, it was hot as hell ,hungover, maybe my 1st month doing group rides and I was riding the bus (73 schwinn yellow) and did it like a boss.
Taco Tuesday ride to Long Beach... all nighter, I think i saw a ghost train, I did the last half with a flat because I just wanted to get it over with, did it on the bus, I looked homeless after... it was epic.

+1 on the Robotz shoutout. There's too many to pick one...lots are memorable...I take that back, though. The fucking Valley No Ride: First and best because it opened the door to everything that came after. and because of the whole, getting lined up against the wall and searched on my first group ride. Fuckin' hooligans.

Was gonna whine about it no longer being on the 2nd friday but I see that there is a ride on the 10th. I guess I liked the swarm the pier rides. Parked at the beach. Rode the bus into town. Then rode back to the beach on the ride. Long time ago, far, far away.

I got to say that last nights ride was the worst ride ever. To the fearless sabotaging leader, your lucky my friend didn't notify me till after the ride about your unnevvesary turns to teach us a lesson...... Next time leave the circus bike at home.

A real mr ride would for one, not leave anyone behind (especially on purpose), also why does route have to be kept secret. Talk about a power trip. What happened to spoke cards that would have route so that EVERYONE would know where the ride was going?

I have been on a couple of rides I'd say and never, I repeat never, have I known the route at the beginning. Except for ciclavia and, or a century ride. I have to agree with this gentleman though, what ever happened to spoke cards? My friends only believe I'm cool and believe I'm a midnight riddazz associate if I show them my cool spoke cards.

last night's ride was pathetic all THANKS to the stupid ass leader who doesnt know anything about leading a ride. He cudnt even wait for like 2 minutes for a beer run trying to ditch people. He had no route. He took us all through an alley and cudve gave us all flats. Lame as ride.

I didn't wait for people at 7/11 because I TOLD EVERYONE where we were going, just like the first stop. I'm not going to wait for 2 mins for 20 people go get their booze or whatever they were getting, and IT WOULDN"T have taken 2 mins.

Louis...all rides posted on m.r.com ARE NOT "midnight ridazz" rides....That's a false assumption. I wasn't on the ride so that's my only 2 cents. an official Midnight Ridazz "ride" is on the 2nd Friday of each month. we're all fortunate enough to have a website to post our rides, but they all are not m.r. rides.

Sure, I just think you shouldn't put the phrase "Midnight Ridazz: ...." in the title of your ride on the calendar post. It confuses people to think it's the 2nd Friday ride. I sometimes forget when it's the second Friday of the month.
I hope you don't take peoples criticisms to heart about not stopping at a liquor store. The ride leader should call it as she/he wants to. People should take care of their own shit on their own time and not delay a ride because they want to get a beer last second. And if assholes are racing in front of the ride leader and getting others confused and lost, then they deserve to get dropped.
Music trailers are a big help if you have one. It's common knowledge that if one is passing up the music trailer/ or leader(s), then you are just being an annoying rider who is going to either hijack the ride or confuse people as to where to go. If you want to go fast, do a loop around to the back of the ride and catch up to the front again, and etc.
It's pretty weird if you don't have a route, but it can be doable if you are decisive early where you are going to turn and communicate that info clearly. A bad leader would have people getting ready to turn one way and decide to do something different last second.
There are different dynamics involved for different sized rides and types of riders.

And +1 to not spilling the route beans entirely! A lotta people seem to come out hoping to experience a new view of the city... kind of to feel the surprise of it all... it gets those endorphins flowing faster and everyone feels it at the same time. That is something that only group riding can do so well.
Bonus points if someone shouts "WHERE THE FUCK ARE WE?!" on a well scouted secret route only known by a few people on the ride. Those are the best!
Best ride of my life? Hands down, robotz. Talk about an endorphin DUMP from all angles. If only we could have had sound bikes that rocked the 20mph+ category. Fuck it, didn't need em. The sound of heartbeat and rampage was more than enough.

I think it all stems from labeling the ride "midnight ridazz" which triggers a special and implied policy of "no rider left behind." ride leaders should really try and bend over backwards for this like they used to... It does confuse people to brand the ride and throw it the friday before the "official" mr ride.
Im not trying to pick sides but My boy Panic has been riding mR rides since the first year or two so he does have a solid sense of what an MR ride should feel like and be like.
A couple things though, if ya dont want to have to wait for people to buy stuff at a store, then dont stop near or at a store... If its true that people were riding ahead of the leader i also endorse just turning when a turn is coming but only if its obvious who the leader is and if the turn is part of the leader's preplanned route. Not just an attempt to ditch people out if spite.

perfect example that i have seen of this being done and is so fucking awesome was at all RWNN. Just seeing them speed up and the ride turns left and they have to you u turn is priceless and hilarious.

I've been going to Real MR Rides® for a pretty long time my damn self. Some of 'em had routes on the spoke card, some didn't. Got "ditched," did you? Boo fucking hoo. Google Maps. It's an adventure.

Google maps may work for you. I know this city well. Was not concerned about being "lost". I was following several riders, never attempting to overtake anyones ride. I was listening to my headphones and did not hear all the rules being yelled out. We were like a 1/2 mile away when a rider caugh up to us to let us know that the ride had took a turn a while back. All this would not have bothered me. It was when I dropped from the ride with my friend and took off on our mission. It was then that my buddy told me that he was riding near the "leader" and heard him tell the group to make a sudden turn in order to drop us. It happened twice, and I felt like that was wrong..... I always enjoyed mr rides, and attended religiously. It was always a good vibe with good times. I always check the ride calendar on this site to try and find a group ride that would resemble those rides. I usually don't get passed the ride info before I know its not for me. I did like what I saw in this ride, and decided to join up. The ride boasted a good speed, not a mosey totaling 25-30 miles. At the mosey pace the ride was going, that could have took all night.
Mr was always a blast, this ride was just far from it...... Some people need to check the psi in their over inflated heads. I will see you out there Roadblock, RIDE ON.

I agree with what Louis did. In fact Im known for doing this to people because I got tired of the headaches, the lose of voice, dropping people, watching the group run a red that doesn't need to be run,... the list is long. Once people stop following the rules the ride is going to get worse and worse because they have nothing to fear and get a mobb mentality. Everyone knows how that goes... the police come.. people get busted.. then cry and boo hoo that they got done wrong. When in reality they have nobody to blame but themselves for not following the rules. I'm sure in 06 it was easier to lead every group ride the traditional way but in 2012 the game has changed and this way has just worked best for me.

I can understand your point, but if you want people to follow your rules maybe you should state that for one that you have rules, and two what they are. If I would have heatd your rules prior to the ride, I will have honored them or bounced. I am 40 years old and I'm not into being taught lessons in that matter. I won't be attending anymore rides, so you can continue your lesson teachings...

I'm very clear on ride rules, give good heads up before making turns, big on people following the rules of the road and it works out well for me. I get what you are saying and I'm sorry you had a bad time on his ride.

I guess my comment is directed at the person who was leading this ride. Don't even know if Louis was the person. My comment goes overall, maybe communication should be key with people who lead rides.. I didn't hear any rules, nor read any in the information page torwatds this ride. I plugged in my tunes and I probably didn't hear these rules being yelled out. I have read discription on rides that have stated that riders will be dropped. I would not even consider attending one of those rides. I ride for fun, and don't want to be following a bunch of rules. I know how, and where to ride. I know if I run a light, or violate any laws that it will fall on me. Other than that, I don't want to hear people barking rules at me. No one gets paid to lead, or follow. Have some fun with it.

I don't get it when people wear headphones on rides. It's dangerous for everyone when people are shouting out to make a turn. If you get lost because you had headphones on and you rushed to the front, boo freakin hoo to you if you get dropped... You probably aren't contributing anything to the ride besides a dgaf attitude anyway. Take the headphones off and become a part of the ride.

I get you. Sure people don't get payed to lead but they are spending personal time thinking of creative routes, spoke cards and different ways to excite people about cycling. Your right communication is key and you wouldn't know because you rock headphones. I cant speak for everyone .. only myself ... You can still have fun but watching people sabotage something you have work hard on kinda sucks. I have no problems calling out b.s on my ride to keep not only myself.. but the group safe. I do get after people to pick up trash, stay out of the way of cars, don't steal and you know what.. if thats what it takes to make people do the right thing.. so be it.... I can live with that.

Was there a music trailer on the ride?
When I lead a ride which I have done in the past a few times, I won't do it unless the music trailer is there...makes things much easier....With that said...I ALWAYS post 2 simple instructions on the ride description:
STAY BEHIND THE MUSIC
STAY IN THE RIGHT HAND LANES
If people go in front of me and the trailer which is usually Harry or Louis (not this louis), we immediately look at each other instinctively and know we need to turn soon....It always works.....
just follow the music....it's that simple....

I did not hear, nor see a music trailer. That was the reason for the headphones, which for the record were not on loud. I do remember the music trailers on the MR rides. They actually work to keep people on the same wave length. I will remember the rules, and try to figure out who is leading. This only in the case that I attempt this again. I enjoy riding mh 300 miles a month however they may come. I don't want to continue going back and forth about this. I wish ypu all peace and safe travels...

THERE was a route. I did some changes because I knew where we were going. If you were to worried about where we were going you should of came and asked me. i would of told you the stop but not the route. OR if it was because you were going to meet up, i would of giving you a print out of the route that I had.

Surrender your route, stop at liquor stores, chase after people who were riding in front of you and make sure you herd them back into a cohesive mass. Otherwise, guys who have been riding since the early days of MR, will demand your head!

And make sure you continue to give misleading information on the ride calendar. Also make sure to boast a good pace, and then bring your little brothers bike which should be ridden at a mosey pace so you can drop people. Keep up the good work as the safety specialist, but whatever you do don't invest in a helmet. In your case I would rather see a helmet being saved.....lastly, make sure you take care of your sarcasm cheerleading squad. The girls are really going to bat for you. Hahaha

Man, Leslie. I wish you could have been there with us to finish the last half of the ride. I still remember it well. It is something I would do again, if I could go back. Yes, it was raining cats and dogs, but we had a bunch of fun. You could cut the solidarity and love with a knife at the end of that ride in DTLA. Ask garyseven (gary rides bikes) about this one. Thanks for the love.

I thought this was a share your best ride experience thread, it seems to have taking a tailspin into armchair criticism.
By best ride experience:
I was 12 and alone riding my huffy sting-ray clone painted brown with a paint brush, I had converted it to BMX via Thrify's (now rite aid) bicycle section. It was a pivotal moment. There was no one else around, no riders or ridazz or spoke cards or music trailers (thank goodness) just me on my bike. I realized that this was about as free and carefree I was ever going to be. I was aware of being a child moving into young adulthood (which I fought tooth and nail) being a teenager was going to suck, I had to try and be "adult" (gross). I was just old enough to hop on my bike and go anywhere I wanted as long I was home for dinner, life was simple, carefree and fun. I guess what I am trying to say is I had at that moment a very profound sense of self and self realization, not a common feat for a 12 year old. That moment of seeing myself very clearly in relation to the world has always stuck with me, I've been chasing it ever sense.
Other good ride experiences was the first SF critical mass I went on (100's of people), the first LA (5 people), the first midnight ridazz (#2,3, 6 ? not sure). riding my bike over the mountains from the valley to simi valley (40+ miles) and the profound solitude I got from that ride, it still holds cathartic properties for me. Doing a rain mtb ride and getting mild hypothermia, riding the santa ana river trail and my friends getting lost, we got there at 8 am and got home at 1 am. First time I cleaned the cab on my single speed, Winning tomatoes beach cruiser race in 2005, Riding through a bunch of pedestrian bridges somewhere near the LA river, I'm not sure where but it was memorable. Building my first chopper, my first tall bike, getting 10 years of choppercabras under my belt. I hope to ad more to this list in the future.
