Depends on the child's point of view of drinking.
Reason being is that some kids will see other riders drink (responsibly) and just follow their example. When on the other hand, some see them and just go on an all out drinking rage.
I guess you just have to create a connection with the individual and coach them. Let them know that, "Hey, there might be other ridazz getting sh*tfaced, but it's not the right way to drink. . . especially being under the age."
"as long as nobody has to look out for ur ass." ????
i couldnt care less for idiots binge drinking or whatever. yeah go knock urself out. just dont crash in front of me, dont ask me to buy you beer, dont ride behind me.
I've been helped countless times by different riders and I had no idea who they are. I always try to do the same with others in hopes others with as well.
Now maybe you have had some terrible experience or your not a like-able person, which I think is false because I know first hand your a good guy.
but the thing too is that i dont mind folks who are new to bikes, etc etc.
just the ones that act like theyve been in it for years talking up all this hype about bicycle advocacy and shit when you know these assholes arent gonna last more than a few months.
all that shit and the idiots who yell at drivers "GET A BIKE!"
dude, get a life.
you know what, ive been on the other side, ive been teh driver where these assholes take up THE ENTIRE FUCKING STREET and not just one lane. you know how fuckign annoying that is? and some shit kid yelling at me to get a bike while he rides off on his fucking cinelli track bike.
these assholes talk about how bikes should have the same rules as automobiles and what not.
well what kind of fucking automobile darts across 3 lanes in full traffic to the left hand turning lane? what kinda car fucking boxes me in as i leave my parking spot?
sucks to be you guys. all i know is the west side has an awesome group of people who are nothing like the people kims1 is describing. you must a be a lucky one too fananu.
my camaraderie left as all the bike rides came to a halt at 7 miles an hour, as all these weird ass kids wearing keffiyehs and yashmaghs came in from the burbs acting like they grew up in the city, as all the kids who rode skateboards and bmx bikes realized that skids are easier. my camaraderie left as everyone who i started out with left.
I dunno... the drinking age in Canada is 19 (or 18 in Quebec) and I was drinking since I was 16. People are going to drink underage no matter what... it doesn't really mean anything. Some people start young, overdo it, then give it up later. Some people start late and become alcoholics. Some young people drink responsibly, and some older people drink themselves to embarrassment. Besides the legality of it all, age is irrelevant.
I think the biggest concern is about people (underage OR not) overdoing it on rides. This needs to be discouraged. If someone seems like they're not fit to ride, we really need to point it out and give that person a good old fashion talkin' to.
legality seems to be the crux of the argument, along with individual maturity. since we cannot create laws for each individual, age has become the determining factor.
I don't know, I'm not going to get into specifics but I think in general people in certain areas are more down to earth than people in certain other areas.
sorry to hear that kims1. I feel wherever i go in this city though for the most part the people who are really into this and ride constantly are good people and friendly people. Hell on WP 3 miles before the finish when wylie's derailleur exploded the two guys with the most hipsterish looking (650c hed 3 hipster) bikes stopped and gave us food and beers!
@canadienne
a good old fashion talking to has resulted in me getting bitched out and nearly getting into a scuffle.
i would honestly rather wait for the guy/girl to fall on his/her face and take themselves out.
im more of a "ha, look you asshole, told you so!" type of person.
@graham
we miss you on TNS.
@larsen
again, i have no beef with any of the SMA or venice people. im sure many of you are great. it's just that after however many times of lame events, ive been put off by that area.
Sorry about your experiences but I haven't had the same ones, maybe it's the west side maybe it's the ride, who knows. I've only ever seen people being helpful to each other, tubes, crashes, repairs, I've even seen people get super drunk and someone else takes the dudes bike home and gives it back to them the next day. Seriously, maybe it's your outlook, if you look for crappy behavior your sure to see it.
"well what kind of fucking automobile darts across 3 lanes in full traffic to the left hand turning lane? what kinda car fucking boxes me in as i leave my parking spot?"
No they do it across 5 lanes out of the carpool across double yellow lines to exit the off ramp. Then they steal the parking spot you were waiting for and are willing to fight you over it.
i have nothing against the westside. robotz and taco tuesday are both good rides with people that look out for eachother.
its sad to think that some people dont like or even care about other ridazz. i always thought that was important as a community like this. leave no ridazz behind is the next thing we are gonna lose.
there have been countless times when ive changed peoples tubes, fix their drive train, whatever. all i got was a reluctant drunken thank you and was left in the dust.
that leave no ridazz behind thought is long gone my friend.
btw, i find it appalling when i have to help out some kid change a flat when he has some tricked out bike. i mean, come on, really?
Sorry to break it to u Fananu but most rides dont practice that leave no ridda behind motto.. Most rides will wait 5 min then leave if thier not fast enough to fix what ever problem that made them stop to begin with...
"I don't know, I'm not going to get into specifics but I think in general people in certain areas are more down to earth than people in certain other areas."
Really?
I've found the same mix of 90-95% friendly awesome people, 4-9% drunken jackasses, .5-1% total idiots / litterbugs / thieves etc. on pretty much every ride I've been on from the Westside to the East Side, but if there's a super-cool down to earth part of town I've missed, please let me know what it is.
people like me? people that make sure some one doesnt get stranded in the middle of skid row? i dont bother fixing shit for people who aren't going to appreciate it anymore. people like me are gonna leave others behind and that will ensure that the next time they come out, they will be prepared with 1 measly tube and the simpleton know how on fixing a tube.
@rbi
i agree.
the only expectations i have on these rides now are drunkos crashing and losing teeth, a stolen bike, some boobs flopping about, and someone throwing up a gallon of beer. which btw, i find all these things hilarious which keeps me coming to these rides.
I did it when I was young, I'm sure a majority of people did. Depending on where you live and where your from you may or may not frown on it. But I can't tell someone to stop doing something that I was guilty of doing myself. Why are people upset about it? If the kid gets plastered and causes drama ok I can see that, but if were just upset because it's against the law then why not start complaining about the weed smoking, or running red light or riding with undocumented people named eddie?
I also think that people can always meet back up with the ride when they have a problem.
Its not that big of a deal.
I hate to have the whole ride wait for me when I know I can fix whatever problem and meet back up with them, unless I got into a serious accident and needed real help.
AND IF YOU GET A FLAT, AND RIDE A BIKE, THEN YA, YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW TO FIX A FLAT, HEY WAIT A MINUTE, YOU SHOULD ALSO CARRY YOUR OWN TOOLS, PATCH KIT, PUMP, AND CARRYING AN EXTRA TUBE, NOT MY THING, BREAKING STEMS IS IMPOSSIBLE, FOR ME.
fuck. does anyone care about riding a bike anymore? or is it only about how you look riding a bike? because you look dumb. that's why people are trying to run you over..
sorry to hate. i hate to hate. but, it's all getting annoying now. i'm no MR veteran; i only started riding with you guys this summer. but, i agree with kims. its all bullshit. i wanted to ride a bike with people and feel included. i didn't feel that way though. there's too much pressure on looking a certain way, acting a certain way, having a certain bike, drinking a certain beer, blah, blah, fuck. and i didn't meet the requirements.
why do you think all the new kids that come to the rides piss you off? i mean, they're only trying to act like the rest of the group.which is you. you set the example for them. so, blame yourself. however, there are a few who do set good examples. i've seen it. but, we all know, regardless of an "all-inlusive" nature, that's just not the hip way, man. MR is becoming commercial.
but, please. somebody prove me wrong. i don't want there to be truth in what i've said. rbi? you always have good criticism and ideas. you know how to step back and analyze.. if only more people could.
*note: the use of "you" is intended just as a general noun. don't take it personal. just reflect on your own actions.
People drink the same beer probably because its cheap.
People wear the same clothes because we like to be comfortable with what we are riding in.
Most people have the same type of bike because thats what they like riding.
Its too easy for someone to look at something like MR and make it out to be bad. We have something thats SO amazing and still there are people who try to generalize it and make it out to be something its clearly not.
"i wanted to ride a bike with people and feel included. i didn't feel that way though. there's too much pressure on looking a certain way, acting a certain way, having a certain bike, drinking a certain beer, blah, blah, fuck. and i didn't meet the requirements.

WTF?
Just keep showing up. Meet a few new folks each time. Some people are friendly, some people aren't. Don't take people ignoring you because they're drunk/stoned/preoccupied/spaced out personally. It's not like there's a battle between fans of Tecate/PBR, and the supposedly "trendy" cyclist stuff like Chrome bags / high-end track bikes are pretty scarce compared with the number of generic bags/backpacks / road bikes, fixie conversions, MTBs, etc. If people are concerned about what to wear on a ride, other than whether it will be comfortable to ride in, they're pretty much missing the point.
Until Roadblock shows up on Oprah to promote the Midnight Ridazz book, you can't say it's gone commercial.
(Seriously though, how awesome would it be to see Roadblock on Oprah, convincing her to start joining night-time group rides so she could lose that weight she's been whining about for years? The Oprah Hustle Ride would be outstanding.)
Wow @ this thread. The people I ride with and have been riding with, from the valley to the westside and back to the eastside have been nothing but great examples of what riders should be. I can see both sides of this argument, but to state that 90% of the riders out there are untrustworthy or show no camaraderie is pretty ridiculous, imo.
I understand we'll all pull from our various personal experiences but I've seen it first hand... it's not that bad. I believe the "community" is taking a lot of flak because of a couple bad apples or shitty things that have happened.

and so on and so on....
I drank once, when I was fifteen, before becoming "straight edge" until close to twenty-three. While my sXe ideals have drastically changed, I can say that I'm for "responsible drinking". However, I don't think minors have the capacity to be responsible about things such as drinking (a broad generalization, of course). I don't like it, but its not my responsibility to police it.
i drank a total of 4 times before i was 21. true story. i know, hard to believe. too busy with school and what not... and i'm glad i waited. it took me another 2-3 years to actually LEARN to drink - meaning, i wouldnt throw up each and everytime i mixed light beers with dark beers, or throw up my lunch, or act like a complete fool with no sense in him. but i have seen some youngsters who dont take their cues from the rest of the mindless zombies.
I CAN NAME SO MANY AWESOME POEOPLE. NOT LIKE SOME OF THE REAL DOUCHEBAGS ON HERE WHO JUST TALK DOWN TO OTHER RIDERS AND SPIT MOSTLY NEGATIVITY (WHETHER IN JEST OR NOT) WHO KEEP THEMSELVES FROM MAKING GREAT FRIENDSHIPS DUE TO ONE REASON OR ANOTHER.
If you can't find someone on MR that you don't hate then maybe you need to look into some sort of change in your life.
I've only met great people on rides and count many of them as friends.
Just cause you feel insecure or see some sort of stupid clique made up of people who like a certain beer doesn't mean it's true. Get over it and ride your bike. These people are great you are the one that sucks.
