Hey everybody, sorry for the shameless self-promotion here, but I've been talking to a bunch of people about this event I run and many ask when it is, so I thought I'd send out a little reminder to anyone who is interested......
SWAP MEET
Saturday, June 28
10pm until late
Betalevel, in Chinatown
Free
If you have no idea what I'm talking about (very likely),
go here.
If you need directions,
go here.
If you want an actual bike-related event,
go here.
P.S. For future reference, it is usually the last Saturday of each month.

Man...I can't believer I haven't heard of this until a few weeks ago. Looks fun. Good, fun, party, in a lowkey / secretish place in china town. Someone who lives in the area should post a ride to this. What about you guys, Chill Chinatown Mosey?Or how about David and trickmilla. Bicycle Bell ensemble could have a performance there.

To the Karaoke experts:
I've never done it before and have a song i'd like to do. If i could find a version of the song, could i bring it to any K place and they could play it for me? Is that possible? Are there many K versions ? ie. Blue Ray or HD DVD? Or is it all the same.
if i can't find the song i want to do, is there a way for me to just burn a copy of the regular song into a K version that is at least audibly playable? i know it won't have the words showing up, etc. I could always lip sync.
thanks.

I honestly don't know about "normal" karaoke establishments -- I've only been to one a couple of times before, and it was a while ago. My feeling is that they
probably don't let people bring their own music. But I could be wrong.
The good news is that there are plenty of options for doing it yourself, at home, if you are so inclined. The music we use at Swap Meet are almost all either .kar or .cdg files. KAR files are midi tracks with lyrics embedded. On a Mac, these can be played easily through Quicktime or other third party applications (Qmidi is nice because you can create playlists -- and because it is free). And then CDG files are basically just a video file that syncs with a vocalless MP3 track. (I think these are also what are actually on most commercially-produced karaoke CDs.) You need Qmidi or another similar program to play them though.
Not sure what software is available for the PC to play these files; I only do Mac.
Both CDGs and especially KARs can be found on the internet for free. It just takes some digging. You can also take a look at
our music library; I'd be happy to send you the song you want, if we have it. There is also free software for creating karaoke Quicktime files called TunePrompter -- you just need to have a vocalless track and the lyrics. Here's
some instructions on how to use it that we've put together (because we actually DO encourage people to bring their own songs to our event).
Sorry not to help with your core question (Can I bring my own music to a karaoke joint?), but hopefully the rest of the info is helpful.

Opening up Swap Meet up to Ridazz!
I'm going to say I enjoy this event more than big group rides.
Sean really knows how to break it down!
