If I wanted to start upgrading parts on my bike - where would be a good place to start (website? bike shop?) - and is there a website that would tell me what parts would specifically fit my bike? Thanks.

pending how old your bike is, start off by going to those co-ops
bikerowave, bike oven, bike kitchen
not only will they help you understand your bike better, its cheaper.
when you have all the logistics figured out, just buy a new bike and upgrade that.
thats how i started with the GT and moved on to the look.

What kind of Schwinn did you get, and what are you trying to do to it?
sheldonbrown.com is pretty much THE place on the web to read up on fixing your bike.
There's a HUGE variety of online bike shops where you can get new parts much cheaper than your local bike shop.
Like the previous people have said, the bike collectives (bikerowave, bike oven, bike kitchen) are a great place to learn about your bike and how to fix it.

for higher end parts, PBK is working out well because of the exchange rates. but you may face some customs fees.
pricepoint has never failed to disappoint.
performance bike can be cheap but they dont have much. always check up pricepoint's clearance section. i got a full crankset with bottom bracket for 70 bucks before brand new.
