LA mountain bike trail recommendation?

I want to take someone new to mountain biking on a ride on the tandem. I don't know the LA trails at all, except for Cheseboro. Is there similar riding nearby that is less likely to have horses all over it? That kind of steepness and terrain is ideal, but my dogs tend to chase horses so I prefer to go somewhere else.

Yes, there's tons of options in the Santa Monicas, and much closer than Chesboro. Westridge and Sullivan ridge fireroads would be a good start and if you're really talented on the tandem, you could go down Sullivan canyon. Lots of good ride beta here....

Yea, if you head up Westridge and across Dirt Mullholand you can descend Sullivan or continue across to The Hub and on to Backbone Trail which drops down into Will Rodger's State Park. It's a big loop that many people have enjoyed. Plenty of singletrack. Borderline epic-ride. Be Safe and Have Fun.

For proximity and fire roads entirely lacking restrictions or prohibitions against mountain bikes, one can't beat the fire roads of the Verdugos. There are other entry points requiring more detailed directions to trailheads, but the easiest point of upward embarkation would be from Brand Park in Glendale. It's not the sexiest dirt riding but it's readily accessible and a lot closer than the Angeles Nat'l Forest or Santa Monica National Recreation Area.

I'd say top of victory is best for lower impact riding. You can park at the top for a dollar.
