lift weights, do resistance training (pushups, pullups), and run every day or two.
make sure to eat plenty of calcium and protein in respective amounts and your bones should be okay.
of course, get a physical at least once a year to check up on yourself.

I'm guessing it could be worse for swimmers

It's mostly a risk for old riders but it's probably a good idea to add some variety to your workouts if all you do is ride. I run a few times a week because its a quicker, more effective cardio workout.

I read that article today.. I'm not old at all (27), but was diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis earlier this past summer. I have to thank bicycling actually, I had jammed a finger on a pothole one night while biking home, got an x-ray to see if it was broken and was told my bones are way too thin for my age. I didn't want to take fosamax because of the side effects but if I haven't improved that much when I get another dexa scan this summer, so be it. Gals, get in your weight-bearing exercise, vitamin D and calcium.. it's sad but serious stuff.

My Mom got diagnosed w/ bone loss at age 55 and decided against drugs. The Doctor was sure she would have no luck without them, but after a year of physical therapy and good diet she proved him wrong! He could hardly believe her when the scan came back showing "normal density" in her bones. If a near-sixty-year-old lady can reverse this without drugs... so can all you cute, young, twenty and thirty-somethings.

and try and crash on different body parts.
