Thread started by marzipan at 10.31.10 - 9:20 pm

just wondering, how does one become a bicycle cop? and, do bicycle cops like to ride recreationally or hold friendly competitions amongst each other? can you trackstand Sgt. Krumer?

reply

Go to joinlapd.org, register for a written test date, pass test, pass all other background, psych, and physicals with flying colors and get an academy entrance date.
After passing and graduating from the academy, spend 2-3 years pulling bitch duty on a correctional/detention assignment then you get traffic/patrol duty.

Concurrently, one should be able to get qualified for bicycle patrol.
All in all, roughly a 3-7 year process if all cards are played right.
I know I'm not Sgt Krumer, but he'll likely say the same thing.

im not personally interested in becoming a bicycle cop, just kind of curious. thank you for the info though!

its funny to imagine bike cops relishing their time on patrol because they get to ride bikes, kick into higher gears for speed, moan when they see uphill sections etc. like all the same things we enjoy doing on our bikes!

i still would like to know if they hold any friendly competitions amongst each other, if there are any bike cops that own their precinct when it comes to skills, if they ride recreationally at all, etc.

Basically it works like this...after you finish the academy and your probationary period (about 18 months) you are considered a "Police Officer II"...a basic cop. To work as a bike officer you have to be bike certified...its a 5 day course.

I know they were considering incorporating bike training into the academy so that everyone already comes out bike certified.

Certain Divisions have "bike units" which consist of approx 6-12 full time bike officers. These officers usually volunteer for the assignment. The division itself may have 30 bike certified officers that in a pinch can be deployed on bikes at the Captain's discreation. A lot of those guys you see on LACM are bike certified but not necessarily in a bike unit. Thats why some seem out of breath...it may have been years since they got their certification and have not been on a bike since.

Most guys that are in a unit do cycle recreationally and are avid bikers. I ran one of the largest bike units in the City a few years back and it was among my most favorite assignments.

There are friendly competitions between the different bike units...and no I do not do any tricks as I fear at my age the injuries don't fade as fast.

Hope this answers your questions.

David

P.S. LAPD does not do custody/detention work....that the Sheriff.

So, LAPD will send you directly to the streets straight out of academy?
I always heard accounts of both LAPD and LASD rookies having to get detention time from various sources.

Well, I guess that's a good thing for whomever wants to get out there and get involved in this line of work.

Composite rotors, proper throttling and blade angle tactics, there's all sorts of ways to make those AS-350s fly as silently as possible.

Like a rider/bike, it's all about the pilot, not the bird.

With a veteran partner, right? I talked to one officer that said academy took one year to complete, then you spent a year alternating between desk work and patrol duty with a seasoned LAPD partner who could show new officers the ropes.

Have things changed that much? Or was he full of hot air?

After you exit the academy than you go to patrol under the watch of a Field Training Officer (those guys with the 2 stripes on their arm) Every few months you get a new training officer and you are onprobation for about a year before you can be considered tenured/trained.

When we did not have a budget crisis we used several local bike shops for repairs...do to the financial issues we now train our officers to do the repairs themselves. To my knowledge we do not have a certified bike mechanic on staff that is not an officer.

Krumer,
Budgets can't be too tight. I spent last week tuning up 8-10 lapd bikes (eww) at $65.00 a pop.

Smith's Cycles is looking for a full time mechanic. Not sure about pay. They're located @ PCH and Oak? in Lomita.

Its only a waste of money if they don't need a tune up.
Its a bargain if they don't get broken down on the road.

Either way ... I'm sure they spend more in a month gassing and maintaining a cruiser then the purchase and lifetime maintenance a police bike.

We do not use the title "corporal" The two stripers that train the probationers are called Field Traning Officers or FTO's for short. Their actual rank is P-3. The two-strippers with the little star are Senior Lead Officers or SLOs.

For repairs that officers simply do not have the skills to make themselves they still use local shops...but that should only be for the more serious stuff....at least that is the directive.

Hey Roadblock,

We are still hiring to attrition...meaning that if we anticipate 200 retirements we will replace those bodies. After 2 years than you can shoot for a bicycle unit. If you really want to work on a bike it will not be a problem! The problem is getting hired. When I was applying (more than 10 years ago) one person was selected for every thousand applications. In all seriousness people from all over the country specifically seek a job with the LAPD.

While the minimum requirements are a GED...to be competitive you should have a diploma. A lot of the guys coming on now have BA and MA degrees.

Sgt. David Krumer
responding to a comment by Roadblock

Because LA is so spreadout...and the LAPD is small if you look at per capita officer ratios of other large cities...the LAPD has had to be more mobile to cover ground. The Patrol Car is the basic police unit as a result (compared to footbeats in NY). In some areas bicycle units are actually much more effective (i.e. Downtown LA) because the patrol area itself is small and the crime problem is concentrated.

It should be fairly easy to keep the turbines throttled down in the LA Basin due to the altitude.
Up here, we're dealing with the hot and heavy atmosphere of 2800 ft and up.
Unless the air's cold, those turbines are going to be throttled up to a higher setting to compensate for lighter air intake.

Now if the bird's keeping itself at 800' AGL or above, the rotor wash should be quite minimal.

Hey ninjabiker,

On Tuesday I filed an official complaint based on your post that motor officers used excessive force by slamming someones head down. You mentioned that there is video. I asked you to contact me and provided you my e-mail. I really need your assistance if this complaint is going to go anywhere. As I mentioned the LAPD will not tolerate excessive force and will take appropriate action. Since you are a witness I need your cooperation. Please contact me! If anyone else witnessed the incident ninjabiker refers to above please speak up.
