drunk kid falls @ taco
Thread started by city_slika at 12.16.09 - 3:42 am

i had just finish talking to that kid at ralphs..asking him if he was koo to ride..he could barely stand up and now riding down that hill on silverlake heading towards sunset..hopefully dudes ok..anybody knoes the kid post wats his conditon..

reply

to translate that last post into english... a young kid was very drunk about 3/4 into the ride at the top of Silverlake Blvd. About halfway down the hill he slammed either his bike or his head into the rearview mirror of a parked car. Went down hard and was unconscious in a pool of blood coming from his nose. 911 called and was taken away within 30 minutes.

i may be mistaken but i heard that he may be part of the midcity misfixed group.

anyone with news?

How many more threads are going to be made in which an underage drunk, because lets face it, that's what he was and probably is on his way to be, gets badly hurt and causes damage to someone else's property - about 99% of the time or so it seems, it happens to be the back window of a parked car.

I hope your nose heals right. Dumbass.

Drunk kids (and adults) on bikes.... Nothing hurts our rep in the eyes of the police and the community more.... Except for stealing and tagging.... LAPD hates bikes. Is this a major reason? Do We reap what we sow?

One In Three Fatal Bicycle Accidents Linked To Alcohol

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2001) — Drinking alcohol and bicycling don't mix well, say Johns Hopkins researchers, whose study of 466 Maryland bicyclists found that a third of fatally injured riders had elevated blood alcohol levels at the time of their accident. In addition, a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 grams per deciliter – the legal level of drunkenness in most states – was found to increase the rider's risk of fatal or serious injury by 2,000 percent.

The report, in the Feb. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, also indicates that helmet wearing declines with drinking. Researchers studied the records of 124 injured bicyclists obtained from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Maryland and the trauma registry of the University of Maryland Medical Center. They also visited each accident site the same month, date and time that the biker was injured and tested 342 passing bicyclists for breath alcohol.

By comparing the alcohol levels in the two groups, researchers estimated that blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of 0.02 g/dL and 0.08 g/dL are associated, respectively, with a six-fold and 20-fold increased risk of fatal or serious bicycling injury. On average, one drink can lead to a BAC of 0.02 g/dL, while four to five drinks can lead to a BAC of 0.08 g/dL.

Only 5 percent of the injured who had been drinking wore helmets. Thirty percent of the injured bicyclists who had elevated blood alcohol levels also had a history of DWI (driving while intoxicated) citations; some probably used bicycles as a form of transportation because their driver's licenses had been suspended, the authors said.

Alcohol may play an even greater role than indicated by this study, the researchers said, since the group did not look at bicycle injuries occurring at night, when 56 percent of fatal bicycling injuries and 32 percent of serious bicycling injuries occur.

"Riding a bike requires a higher level of psyc!@#$?tor skills and physical coordination than driving a car, so alcohol has an even stronger effect on bicyclists than drivers," says Guohua Li, M.D., Dr.P.H., associate professor of emergency medicine and lead author of the study. "It's a double jeopardy. Those who ride under the influence are most in need of protection, yet in our study, they were least likely to wear helmets."

An alarming trend, researchers note, is that while the number of fatal bicycle accidents in children has decreased by 70 percent since 1975, it has increased in adults by about 65 percent during the same time period.

The helmet laws that worked well for children should be extended to adult bicyclists, says Susan P. Baker, M.P.H., another author of the study and professor of health policy and management at Hopkins' School of Public Health.

"We are especially concerned because helmet laws do not cover adults, who have the highest death rates, are the most likely to have been drinking, and are the least likely to wear helmets," Baker says. "Alcohol abuse and bicycling is an increasing public health problem that warrants more enforcement."

The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The other authors were John E. Smialek, M.D., of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Maryland; and Carl A. Soderstrom, M.D., of the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

I would say that the worst thing in the eyes of the public is confrontations with cars. that is the usual thing funneled trough the eyes of the media. and any time i have discussed group rides with people, and they have something negative to say its always that they heard riders attack cars. i think that will ultimately be the down fall of MR

Ive come to notice there is alot of negativity in the threads toward fellow riders! This would be yet another time when, yes a "dumbass" gets hurt riding a bike, wow lets stop and think, your going to tell me that youve never done something stupid or careless on a ride ( in group or not) casue if thats what your saying i could tell you right now your lieing out your teeth! How about instead of being sarcastic towards that specific rider (whoever he or she may be) have a little pation, cause im pretty sure if it was you in that situation, the last thing youd be expecting from the community youve come to love so much is negativity and sarcasim.

i get drunk on rides as well. the difference is knowing your limits and what level of intoxication is safe or not safe for you to ride with. i never get drunk to where i cant stand on rides. i hate being that drunk. we cant call this kid a dumbass, he's a kid. part of being a kid is learning lessons which you cant have already had by making mistakes. he probably didn't know his drinking limit, and overestimated his reaction time and ability to ride safely. now he's in the hospital and probably will never drink anything like that again. sadly someones car got damaged in the act but the police have his info, he will legally have to cover some costs at least.

it's sad that he made a mistake and is paying dearly for it, but dont be an asshole to him. he's already got enough to deal with. I just hope all kids on rides like him could take the lesson he learned for themselves and stop drinking so much on rides.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

im sorry to hear about this kid crashing and i hope he recovers well, i have definitly gone down pretty hard and it may or may not have been because of alcohol but, either way i fell and i had the comunity to fall back on when i couldnt do anything besides lay around and complain. i think we should all be a little more friendly and a little less on the, i ride a bike and hide behind a fake persona so i can be standoffish or i can talk shit on the internet. just my opinon. also the forum has changed alot recently and i think we need to change that, this is the second and some times even the first thing people see when they look up the the "Midnight Ridazz" i dont want them to turn to the forum and be like, "fuck bikes in LA all they do is talk shit on eachother when someone gets hurt" in my opinon that is NOT a community!!

very true, but drunk driving is so much worse because you're driving around a ton of metal at 20+mph. bike accidents usually involve hitting something like a parked car or curb and just hurting yourself (not in all cases, but usually). however your point is very valid and i take that into account. i consider myself a good drunk rider because i dont get really drunk, but that doesn't mean i'm not going to crash. in that rare case, it would just involve me and my helmet.

"in that rare case, it would just involve me and my helmet."

And any other cyclists immediately behind/around you, or parked cars (the owners of which would prefer not to have damaged).

If you're not sober enough to drive a car, you're not sober enough to ride a bike, it's pretty simple.

ya get a lot of people together and some of them will be dummies.
I've had some close scrapes with dummies that were drunk and or just not really thinking on a ride. I've seen MR veteranos go down hard from drinking too much. I've seen people that were totally soboer cause crashes.

Yes people do dumb shit when they drink.
Since alcohol is the most popular drug in the US dumb shit is kind of our middle name.
United "Dumb Shit' States of America ... That has a nice ring to it.

Anyway.
You always have to watch your back when riding. Cars, drunks, inexperienced/ distracted ridazz. Whatevz.

As long as good people keep coming out to good rides and setting good examples. The rides will keep going. Its never gonna be 2003 again. Thats how life goes. We live, we evolve, life changes.

I hope that ridaa is OK. We all do goofy shit, and sometimes we get a harsh lessson out of it.

CM in los angeles is a sprint at times and a party the other times... last CM riders stopped right on wilshire and vermont... and it was not to demonstrate, protest or educate drivers about the rights of cyclists... it was to scream at a girl at the condo complex... i stopped ahead of people to the side of the street but that is an example of an MR theme, party party party... which is cool but the last friday of the month is MR disguised as CM.... CM does not exist.... i do not think most riders really know what CM is suppose to be....

huey, if you're referring to my comment about ^ what's wrong with the statement above, I was pointing out the absurdity of the logic. i don't give a shit about anyone's gammer.

Hate me for saying this... but I don't feel compassion towards his cause. You make your bed, now please lie in it. My grandmother was always right. ALWAYS.

And please instead of dancing around the subject why dont you address it? Drinking goes hand in hand with both CM and MR. Lets stop apologizing for the idiots and start seeing how we can help avoid this shit.

c.i.c.l.e's rides seem to be doing ok as well as the spokenart and theres at least one other ride I've got my eye on and hopes up for. MR has always been the party on wheels ride, whatever that means.

The ACTR was the first MR ride I'd been on in quite a while and things didn't seem too different from when I used to ride regularly on these rides. I think Borfo was at the front of the ride? I was back in the pack, trying to stay in the right lane and stop at some of the red lights, etc, it was a better ride though than what I was kinda expecting. I'll be out for more again.
