Skateboarding is a dangerous activity for young hoolagins!
That said ... It would be great to ride somewhere by bike and bust out the dexx.
We were riding on pacific in long beach this weekend and saw a great little mini ramp right off the street. I'm not sure what the deal is with the place but is doesn't seem to be listed on this insane list of skateparks.
WTF!? According to that site there is over 30 skateparks in So-Cali!
Back in my day day we basically had to choose between Pipeline, Delmar, Quasi Legal spots like Sadlands, and of course some abandoned pools like the AIDS bowl and Rochelle's Motel.
Of course we had to walk barefoot to all of these places and ride boards that we carved by hand with sharp stones.
well I used to have a sears 21 speed bike with a spring loaded rack and I would put me board on it and hit the ditches like the viper bowl or the oakwood apts ditch
I'vs skated since I was 6 or 7. That's me a few years ago --->
Culver City has a great looking bowl as does Santa Monica, Glendale, and Encino. http://www.socalskateparks.com/ is the best source for parks in socal.
Remember that Midnight Ridazz was NOT started by people on bicycles.
It was started by bicyclists AND SKATEBOARDERS!
As for me, I've been somewhere like Pedlow, The Cove, or Glendale every single weekend for almost the past 2 years solid. The best reason to do 15 mile bike rides is to keep those leg muscles in shape for carving the pools, man!
roadblock, its by the lake. we were near it on the fast ride up here. you can skate it, but i dont know if anyone has done the complete loop. short boards and long boards bomb it all the time.
I generally place skateboarding on the elite, fence-sitting, type of sport I partake in.
Last time I tried it, I fell down on my ass pretty hard and couldn't sit for two weeks.
BTW, are there any real, instructional aides aside from the usual, "you gotta have skillz" douches?
I go to skateshops asking about that type of thing and the person behind the counter looks like they're going for a shotgun.
skateboarding used to be a culture not a sport so first pay no attention to x-games and anything you see on NBC. all of that stuff is garbage. go get a board and just ride for the fun of it. no questions required. just ride
I feel sorry for anybody who has to learn skateboarding as an adult.
I started out by riding on my knees (we had a whole knee riding posse of 7 year olds on the late 70's) and it wasn't until i got a bit older and took it up again that I actually tried to stand up.
While there may be good instructions, the basic balance thing is a lot of physical memory and falling and getting up and practice. Once you move from flat ground to embankments it starts all over again. Some people get it more naturally than others, and experince surfing, snowboarding, or skimboarding doesn't hurt.
Be prepared to fall. To get scrapes, shinners, scabs, gravel in the hands (palm-a-granite), dinged elbows, knees, and the ocasional impact to the tailbone.
Young kids have the right mix of daring, resilliance, and stupidity that allows them fall over and over again and worry more about breaking their board then losing some skin on the asphalt.
This is Danny. I didn't know you skate - cool! I used to skate a lot many years ago. In fact, I lost the tip of my finger doing a Ho Ho Plant :(. Now, I can barley do an ollie.
To all of you oldtime skaters here....FIND YOUR OLD SKATEPARK MEMBERSHIP CARDS and scan/email them to me (email addresson the site) for inclusion on HTTP://WWW.NOidNOskate.com
------> are just a few of the over 300 i have archived on the site.
That Ojai full pipe is dope. We angered a pants less fisherman skating it once. Looooong story. Anyhow. Next Ojai ride can stop here at my friends mini ramp.
Skating is way fun. I do it mainly as a form of transportation. I remember running out of gas on Cahuenga and I skated down passed Hollywood Bowl to get some gas and back up with the barrel. Boards have spared me in times of little transportation. They've also allowed for me to have fun while getting places instead of having to stay fixated on a bus stop just Waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
Go Skateboards ! Long, Short, Fish Live oN.
