I'm so excited that i can finally do the Hustle as I don't have a night class this week. I hope there are lots of spring breakers coming out tonight to keep me company in the back.

I was thinking the same thing. 1st Wolfpack. Will I Bust A Tarsis?

we followed the ride together on my first wolfpack. she was fixed with a spinny gear and kept slowing for every downhill, and i was dying trying to get over colorado blvd on my taller gearing. it was like cat and mouse, cheering each other on the whole way.
i quit when i realized we were halfway to my house, though. not this time.

Is there normally a slower group trying to catch up to the main pack?
Alfredo04.13.09 - 12:21 pm

And also, (I really hate asking this) but do we really need thorn resistant tires?
Iono, but he put it up there. Not sure if its a inside joke or anything.

We should ride down to Inglewood/LAX

Awesome. Always look forward to seeing new riders.
I always tell people who are intimidated by the ride.... first of all its about endurance, not speed... our smoke breaks are long enough for pretty much anyone to catch up.... secondly, wolfpack is only as fast as the group that shows up. If 30 "slow" ridazz showed up then that's how fast wolpack is that night.
Lastly, if you are not up to the level on endurance, come back 4 weeks in a row.... I've yet to see someone not finish the ride after 3 consecutive tries.
So... don't be afraid to have some fun blasting around LA tonight!

you don't necessarily need thorn resistant tires, but you do need at least GOOD tires.
whatever you bust, you don't want it to be your tires. Trust me, I know.

and yes, Alfredo there is always a slower group, which consists of me.

Alfredo:
You can do it on any tires or bike you want. There is one guy who rides an MTB.
But there are a lot of rough roads and it sucks to stop all the time for flats, so either be ok with flatting and getting dropped, or run tough tires.

would the mtn bike guy be emmanuel? hispanic with long hair in a pony tail?

Thorn resistant tires are basically a must have at the risk of your own peril. There are tons of potholes and trash on the streets and our broke-ass govt won't be fixing them or cleaning it up anytime soon.

If you commute on your bike, you know what happens to thin racing tires when you hit a pothole, thorn or glass in the road. Gatorskins, everwears, armadillos or any other city-proven tires are always, always recommended. You never know when some asshole tree is going to litter the road with thorns, giving you a double flat. And of course, that's so much worse if you're going fast, hence the helmet.

OH you mean to wolfpack, i take santa monica the entire way to vermont then left on vermont, right on fountain
robin swabin04.13.09 - 1:29 pm

i assume you're riding back the same way, more or less?

That guy on the mtb was awesome. I hope he rolls again tonight.... it shows you that you don't need to have the lightest bike or the slickest clothes to run game....in fact I challenge all you spandex-clad riders to put on some street clothes... its better for your training.... remember... this is not a race. This is a HUSTLE.
Roadblock04.13.09 - 1:45 pm

mmmkay, see I thought the Hustle would take us through f-ed up streets on purpose. Why, I don't know, I just assumed.
Alfredo04.13.09 - 1:55 pm
reply
ha! thats my boy emmanuel, i dont know if he'll go tonight though hes been working graveyard lately
theladiesman04.13.09 - 1:57 pm
reply
Its definitely not on purpose... but you can't do 40 miles in LA without hitting 50% fucked up broke ass streets.... funny thing is a lot of us know the potholes and dangerous shit that we call it out a half block before.... lost two riders to the curb at miagis on sunset.... I call that out religiously.
Roadblock04.13.09 - 1:59 pm

god street clothes will constrict your movement a ton though

oh my, i wonder how everyday people do it. I mean how can they walk with street clothes on, now those are warriors.
theladiesman04.13.09 - 2:04 pm

really? I did my first wolfpack in a dress shirt and dockers, which I ditched halfway through because they (the pants) were 3 or 4 sizes too big and falling off me. I did it after already logging 45 miles earlier that day.
You can do this ride.
Cereal for Celery.
FuzzBeast04.13.09 - 2:04 pm

@ robin do you want to ride over there together?
tfunk40804.13.09 - 2:09 pm
reply
Yeah don't trip I'm not saying you have to wear anything different... I'm just saying challenge yourselves... cause really, the spandex has an effect.... fast serious riders have full kits and wear them out of comfort... it not only makes them faster (duh) but makes them
look faster which intimidates new riders from participating.... obviously no one on the ride ever comes off elitist... but it does intimidate people and the whole fun of wolfpack was that everyday joes would show up and eventually ride as strong as the legends...
So I'm just putting it out there, challenge yourselves and show up in civilian garb. It'll slow you down and give you good training for your races.... and it will be less intimidating to the new kids who come out.
its why I'm such a monster those times when I roll out to long day rides in spandex and surprise all yawlz. (I kid)

sure we can meet up, where/when were you thinking?
robin swabin04.13.09 - 2:14 pm

i'll be at santa monica & westwood at 9:10 which is on the way. is that alright? i figure you'll want to leave your apt earlier to account for my slowness =]
tfunk40804.13.09 - 2:21 pm
reply
roadblock im sorry i dont think i can keep up with rich and those other guys if i were to wear street clothes, but i do see what youre getting at.
One of the problems is that street clothing is cotton, and cotton gets all wet and cold and sucks
robin swabin04.13.09 - 2:21 pm
reply
I sort of use the ride there to warm up so i suggest you try to work up a sweat on the way there, itll work in your favor when the ride starts.
How about i roll by westwood and santa monica at like 9:20-9:25? I cant really swing any earlier than that. The pack doesnt really leave till 10:30 anyways so you should be fine
robin swabin04.13.09 - 2:23 pm

Rich will be required to wear a parachute.
Roadblock04.13.09 - 2:25 pm

alright, yeah, that works. just do what you normally do then, and i'll mosey along SM, and eventually you'll pass me on SM and i'll draft you the rest of the way to the start spot, yeah? that way we don't get confused/antsy from waiting for the other to show up on westwood.
tfunk40804.13.09 - 2:31 pm

@ robin
i have a serious sweating problem. in fact, im in an air conditioned room and im sweating right now. synthetics are a must for me, and my shitty seat kills, so the chamois is essential too.
HOWEVER, you can always wear clothes over your spandex. im probably going to be rocking my AIG soccer jersey tonight ($9.99 at ROSS)
plus, a big, floppy, wet sweater will make you push a lot more wind. you'll be surprised.

I love that monsters like wise cole feliciano rich block robin jon - a couple of the newer regulars like John are CAT1 ranked, keep pushing the front... but the traffic and lights are what keeps everyone fairly close together....
