Carlsbad Triathlon

Knowing that there's a lot of machismo on this forum, I figured I'd throw this out there. With all the Caturdays, Sirens, Wolfpacks and CubCamps, someone's gotta bite. There's an sprint distance triathlon in Carlsbad on July 12th. You can complete a sprint triathlon even if you can only doggie paddle and barely jog 3 miles. Only 12 miles of actual biking. The real challenge would be getting down there. Carlsbad is 90-some odd miles south of LA. Think of it as a mini Aids Life Cycle.

Leave LA on Thursday, ride 90-some miles over the course of a couple of days, relax on Saturday, and then do the race Sunday.

Has anyone taken PCH that far south? Are those other streets or old highways adjacent to I-5 safe?
