I was only there because traffic had slowed and I wanted to get up front at the red.

yeah I get mixed reactions... like I'm being a busy body telling someone how to ride. I was telling this girl I know that I saw her riding in the doorzone and she should ride 4 feet blah blah. but my friend who was present interrupted and tried to make me out to be a bike safety nerd (which I absolutely am) and kind of shut me down. months later girl gets doored HARD. true story.

Getting doored is scary.. I don't even want to think about getting smacked by a door into traffic. don't hesitate to call people out on it, you're seriously doing them a favor.

wow.
there has to be a better way to tell people to be safe
withouth being elitist
aksendz04.22.09 - 7:20 pm

yeah people just have to learn on their own I suppose..... no one wants to be told what to do or how to ride.

i got hooded once.
riding on the sidewalk
when i was boob rider

blarg.
all this pragmatic stance shit is bullshit.
let people know. Someone told me i rode in the door zone once (actually a few times), and even though my first instinct was to roll my eyes, i find myself riding on the left side of the bike lane when im alone now.
Theres more hurt in not saying something

in this case, nobody needs to tell me im not doing a good job of transcribing my thoughts into text... i already know that.

one of the things that really impressed me about MR was the level of communication and concern for others that everyone here shows. i truly appreciated the feedback as a novice rida, and i frequently dispense with it when im on a ride or when i see people on the street. you might feel like a dork, but get that conversation going. it's nice to talk to strangers....very european.

but how do you do it nicely when you're trying to communicate that message a good distance across in a noisy environment
i feel like an aggro roadie on a crappy mtb and a penis helmet!

i was riding in new york city a couple years ago.coming home from work hauling ass down first ave in the east village in the bike lane and BLAM! hit a door strait on and bent the door backwards off its hinges.i freak out ,jump up and start kicking the front headlights and grill in.two guys jump out and try to stop me and i realize its two paramedics.they calmed me down, sat me in the truck and patched me up real good.i thanked them, refused to a hospital trip, and rode back home.as i hobbled away i shouted "sorry about the truck" which was now useless.
and now i thank you NYFD

One time, a cop pulled in right in front of me and opened their door immediately trying to intimidate me. And then they proceeded to harass me about bullshit for no reason at all, just because I was on a bike in an area where not many ride often. I am amazed how I did not lash out at them despite how angry I felt.
Getting doored is something that riders need to have more awareness about. You really have to be prepared to avoid the worst from people in cars 24/7.

EVERYONE. I LOVE YOU ALL. STAY OUT OF THE DOOR ZONE!!!! NEVER GIVE UP YOUR SPACE ON THE ROAD. 4 FEET FROM PARKED CARS. HOLD THAT LINE EVEN WHEN THERE IS A GAP BETWEEN CARS!
there... how was that?
Roadblock04.22.09 - 11:26 pm

pretty good.but as i found out "live and learn".
i dont plan on doing that again.
another thing is look for people sitting in parked cars.chances are that door is about to swing your way
