I just had the following email forwarded to me sent, August 11 to a neighborhood group by an LAPD representative out of Northeast Division. Clearly there's some EXCELLENT detective work going on over there:
Text of email:
"Hello all! I have heard some info re: a very large group of bike
riders who meet at the Pioneer Chicken on Echo Park every 2nd Tues of the mo.
Apparently they ride, block traffic, and cause havoc. Does anyone
have any info about his group? I have looked them up on the web, and confirmed that they do meet here every 2nd Tues. Has anyone seen this group or had any bad experiences with them?????? If u have seen them there, can some one estimate the size/# in the group??????
Thnxxx for your input!

sounds like a good opportunity for either EDUCATION - the ride is for fun & for promoting bike culture, the people creating havok are outsiders or agent provocateurs or, at the least a bunch of rowdy drunks that don't represent bike riders in general.
Or an opportunity for MISINFORMATION - They still meet at Echo Park, every week, there are 10,000 riders. They come from all over the country and hop between taco trucks and donut shops. They are representatives of various fringe groups, including but not limited to the Hizbollah, Irish Republican Army, The New Black Panthers, The Christian Coaliation, The Project for a New America, Democratic Leadership Council and the United Teachers of Los Angeles. Daryl Hannah is a Rida.

Hello Midnight Ridazz...thnxxxx for your interest in my email. And I do abreviate words occasionally since I receive/respond to numerous email per day. Appologies if anyone was offended, as u say.
In any case, I received 1 complaint regarding your group and traffic/drinking/vandalism issues. That was the cause for my email inquiry to the community that I work in. I have to assure u that I (nor LAPD) was "assuming" anything negative about your group. If I was assuming, I wouldnt have solicited response from the community in which u ride. I have to tell u that the majority of the responses I got were postitive about your group. LAPD just asks that you not vandalize property/windows, ride in the middle of traffic, etc. That is all. Please trust me when I tell u that LAPD is not a big monster trying to shut down your group. Just ride safely with due regard for others, and dont ride drunk! You can still get arrested for DUI, even if only on a bicycle.
So have fun, b safe, and ride on...hope to see u all out there sometime.

I have to say that you guys were very cool last friday. I dont know if you were invovled in any way with that but thanks for recognizing that we are simply trying to ride and spread bicycle awareness while meshing harmoniously with the motorist that we share the road with.

Wow. The shit you can dig up in this forum. LOL.
To answer your question, I'm probably never going to take down that LAPD salute. It had meaning back then and it has meaning now. the idea is to love all people into the group, even those that hate deserve to be loved.
The stream of consciousness, that is this forum reflects the mood of the days.... if the LAPD indeed does hate bike riders then it will continue to be a topic here.... when the relationship improves, the topics fall like lead balloons.
Lots of interesting developments today at the police comission hearings. I actually felt like they were listening. No one was reading a paper or texting (Parks cough) or talking amongst themselves. I made eye contact with everyone and it felt good to get our voice out there.
Next stop: City Hall this FRIDAY 10AM.
Ride on.

I'm totally pissed at Roadblock . . . a tie?? Why not bring chemical weapons into the mix? I mean, can we have our battles with dignity please? I feel like he totally upped the ante on all of us by wearing a tie, and really set a bad example. What's next, suits? (DJwheels and John wores suits!)

Hey RB, just saying thanks for stepping up and handling matters... You have had the endurance to keep this going and staying involved. I hope I hope I can speak for everyone when I say "Keep up the good work, and keep two wheels on the ground."
Really dude, a tie? Next time, could you at least wear a tuxedo t-shirt?
