For a while there, I was convinced that New Jersey was in fact the source of everything cool in America.
It had such a bad reputation that, it seemed, people who had the inclination to not-suck had a lot further to go to overcome the reputation of suck.
So, like, Maxwell's is in Hoboken. Yo La Tengo? From New Jersey. MikeBikeMike?
See?
Then, I met people from Ohio. Now, THEY'RE cool cats.

Perhaps my memory is tinted by rosy Bike Kill nostalgia, but I seem to remember that there were some pretty cool people in Newark. They also rode bikes. I am convinced that these two things (the coolness and the bike riding) are related, not in any kind of unidirectionally causal way, but as an ongoing feedback process. In much the same way that the people make the place and the place makes the people, the bikes bring the coolness and the coolness brings the bikes.
