Clean Riders Clean Streets.
Thread started by

In light of the recent drama I think its time to clean up and do some good deeds. Lets steal an idea frm the burrito project and spend some time doing volunteer activities on rides instead of drinking and smoking till the sun comes up.
That was fun but obviouly for some of us (me included) it has become a negative factor in the community.
I suggest we pick a street and clean it up. Any street just one that needs it. This would be a sober ride in the early evening. Bring a bunch of garbage bags and some coffee.
Anyone interested. Its time to make amends.

@stilline
perhaps instead of the cleanup ride being a reaction from the past deeds that have been done, it can just be something we want to do and stay with rides like this in addition to a good ole time of debauchery. moderation, i suppose.

Oh or we could do a ridaz used clothing ride.and collect warm used clothing for the poor, for the up coming winter.
We could all go down to skid row, bring tools ansd tubes and fix up some bikes.

You are right. I don't expect it to have any effect on our standing with the police department. I just want to do something good. This is for riders who want to do something for others. Its not meant to be a PR campaign for the bike scene.
Theres nothing wrong with a lot of party time I just need something different for a while.
Threre are already a few people on the site who are constantly planning and executing good community activities. I hope a lot more poeple will start giving us ideas for other things we can do on a volunteer basis.

Shit comes with the territory.
Eventually, when the crowds get down to the "who gives a shit" status, the LE will most likely feel their work's been achieved and that they could go connect a taser-bolt with someone else's chest.

Herb is not the problem. The problem is people thinking that herb is bad. If all we did was smoke on the rides and not drink things would be SO much different and a lot of bad shit would NOT happen. I would not have been put on probation, people would not be crashing as much, and a lot less tickets would be given out.
Booze is the problem, Herb is the solution.

I don't mean to imply that smoking is the problem. Just that if we are going to go out and set some sort of example with this ride then we should refrain from doing things that add to the drink/smoke/ride reputation the bike scene has already set in concrete for us. By all means get stoned before or after but keep the atmosphere on this particular event clean and sober.

If you want the police to not get pissed at you for hanging around their station, why don't you call up their PR Unit:
http://www.lapdonline.org/inside_the_lapd/content_basic_view/2031
The desk sergeant the night we licensed out bikes en masse said that they would be happy to coordinate something with us if we would go trough their PR Unit.
THINK ABOUT IT.
This is a good idea, BTW.
I talked with the local Obama campaign and said that I'd like to organize a ride doing something similar to this (a week ago). The hard part was coming up with a couple of places in need of cleaning and also documenting the event for posterity.
There are enough trailers, cargo bikes, and my bakfiets that can be used to take tools, bags, and bags full of garbage (once we're done picking stuff up).
I thought that a little "guerilla gardening" might also be called for on this ride. What do you think? If it were a regular ride, we could choose to bless a small area in L.A. with a mini-cleanup and gardening effort.
Nothing too big, but something to keep the Ridazz interested and to elp spread good will towards local bike riders.

This is the start of something beautiful, thank you for letting me be a part of it.I was a very big nay sayer about this whole idea at first.I really did'nt think that picking up trash in downtown would do anything,But you're right Matt you could see that some of the people down there were really happy to see us doing something.Skidrow has a lot of problems and I guess when I think about all of them I felt that picking up trash would'nt make a big enough impact to all the things they need down there, but you know what,ANYTHING IS BETTER THEN NOTHING which is all we usaually do to help the problem.Last night made me feel good, but it's not about how it makes us feel it's about how it makes all those people down there feel.
P.S.I talked to someone last night about how we should bring food and they said "These people have shelters to get food and don't need to bring foodcause they can already get it."Well I disagree everwhere we rode last night I heard people call out for burritos.People need more food down there and skidrow needs another burrito project.

So this was a success, but never repeated. The recent concerns over MR's reputation and the trouble we've had with messes left at our ride stops reminded me of this ride.
There's a lot of untapped potential with some of the ideas mentioned in this thread. Also, just the cleaning up part is awesome all on its own. It's getting warm out now, so there are more people out and more people on the streets, which means more garbage.
We all love this city, or we wouldn't ride through it. ALSO, maybe we will exert more influence on some ridazz to leave no trace on our adventures.
Who's down to give this another go?

This ride had a good intention but many of the people who participated knwo that 3 min after we finished cleaning up some part of DTLa a bunch of city paid workers showed up to do the same thing.
How can we do this again without all the duplication of effort?
What sort of community projects can we organize? Who has the hook up?

maybe if the group is large enough it can be divided into sub groups which will spread around the general area cleaning.
I'm in, I just got a rack and panniers for my mom's beach cruiser asoI can borrow those for this ride.
