Never get work done at Safety Cycles ... I had them install my sugino messenger cranks I bought from them 2 weeks ago. Last Saturday (3rd time riding since installed) my pedal fell off while riding because whoever installed it .. forced my pedal in and stripped my left crank arm.. I go and tell them .. the guy says " well your pedal looks stripped " .. Umm yeah dude you did it ... They are only going to replace my crank arm and not the pedal they ruined... on top of all of this .... Instead of giving me a black crank arm to match the guy insisted that I take a mismatch silver .... I told him no and he said he would have my black crank arm by the end of the week. Today is Friday .. no crank arm .... So no riding for me ...I learned a lesson from this .... Buy tools and do it myself ....

Two suggestions: Check out Catalina Bicycles on Catalina & 3rd, be prepared that they don't speak much English, but they're good about trying to hand gesture and translate. They have always done good by me (although I've only had them do minor work).
Second suggestion, the same thing happened to me with a crank arm and pedal. I went to Bikerowave, got a $2 replacement crank arm, and fixed it in all of 5 minutes, with their help. I plan on getting a replacement crank arm to match what's on the bike eventually, but at least I'm riding, right?

Is that the place on Melrose with the loud guy who yells about brakes? Because they installed my friends crank and it also stripped/fell off on him. I get all of my work done at Palms or Helen's. I rather like paying people who do good work, especially my local bike shops. :)

in a sense, i guess. but if you don't know what you're doing and non of the volunteers know what to do(it's happened), then you're still gonna leave with a have assed job. sometimes it's better top pay a pro the first time and possibly have them walk you through.

one of my friends went to the Bike Kitchen about a year and had one of the volunteers install his crank and bottom bracket. But it wasn't put on properly.. : He donated around 40 bucks for the help, but after a few rides his crank and bottom were badly stripped and had to replace them :( ...
but I guess its his fault too for being overly dependent on other people to get his bike fixed

It's been said several times, but read, ask, and learn to work on your own bicycle. Trusting someone to work on your bike for a critical repair is like trusting some with your life. There's not too much to do on a bicycle on a bicycle that isn't within the technical expertise of a shade-tree mechanic with the right tools. You can do what I did and work at a bike shop for a while. Just don't go off on your boss like I did (he was a serious a-hole).

I buys tons of things from Safety Cycles ... this was the first time I have let them do anything .. I cant think of the mechanics name off the top of my head .. but if I saw him I would know him...

also make sure that if the crank they replace it with is the same size. i had a bike shop strip my crank and replace it with a mismatched size. fucked up my knee.

I went to Orange 20 to get a crank arm replaced and they didn't have any in stock. I vote for bike co-op.

Safety Cycle has been right to me.
Before O20 that was my local shop.
O20 has always treated me right.
The helped me put my bike together and it has been rock solid for 2 years, so i don't need to visit them very often.

Shocking ... On the FMLY ride this weekend this kid had the same thing happen to his brand new crank set on the ride ... when he described who installed it ...same dude .... Has anyone else had any issues with Safety Cycles because this problem of terrible work is going to get someone hurt and needs to be taken care of.

more likely than not, your pedal stripped the crank arm, but the mechanic essentially stripped the crank arm by forcing your pedal with bad threads into the crank arm.
the metal from the crank arm is most likely softer than the metal of your pedal's spindle.
And why is a shop installing cranks and pedals for you? I figured ijunes would have scolded you by now. He seems to be maturing.... i'll have to talk to him about this...
