HERE'S THE SCOOP-
LANCASTER, Calif. A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a car in Lancaster, authorities said Wednesday.
Dan Tran, 19, of Lancaster, died at a hospital following the crash, which occurred about 10:55 p.m. Tuesday at 30th Street West and Avenue L-6, sheriff's Lt. Stefanie Fredericks of the Lancaster Station said.
Tran was riding his bike south on 30th Street West when he collided with a 1989 Honda Civic that also was traveling southbound, Fredericks said.
The man driving the Honda, 38-year-old Renal Fuller of Lancaster, was interviewed but was not arrested.

Was the rider going down a big hill brakeleess fixedgear and smash into the rear of the vehicle?

Terrible news. If he was riding brakeless and slammed into a car from not being able to stop and died because of it, maybe it will be a wake up call to the people who should have a brake on their bike.
Just thinking about losing someone that I know in this community sends shivers down my spine.

It seems weird that these articles have a major bias towards describing the cyclist as colliding with the vehicle, rather than the other way 'round...and yet this seems like such an impossible thing to occur, at least to a fatal degree...

Brakes can be dangerous too. I know a lot of people that went over the bars with their front brake.

If they went over their bars with their front brakes, they maybe they're brakes were not installed correctly. The brakes shouldn't come off or was it on their person?

Maybe they were skidding for show and tapped the front brake that will do it. Some kids don't know the difference between skidding to stop and skidding for show.

What franz sed - if you endo using a front brake, then you need to learn to use your brakes properly. Practicing stoppies is a good way to do it, so is riding fixed and practicing skip stops (since you learn to sense how much weight is on the rear wheel).
There is no way to stop a bike faster than a properly applied front brake (ie to the point where there is little to no weight on the rear wheel, but it's still on the ground)...not even close!

when i ran a front brake i could stop on a dime by skidding and applying the front brake at the same time. of course, i wasnt doing some crotch on the stem skid, since i can do it sitting down.
