I can't entirely blame people for reposts, since it's next to impossible to follow what has been posted unless your job is reading MR full time. Things get buried 2 or 3 pages back in a matter of a couple days.
I don't mean to imply that LAPD is all rainbows and ponies, especially given their behavior during the DNC protests in 2000. But have there been any recent incidents of LAPD stalking rides with helicopters, stringing up nets across the street to apprehend riders, or shoving people off their bikes, as NYPD has done?
There's been active hostility from Santa Monica PD, LA Sheriff's Dept., Monterey Park PD, etc., but even that doesn't approach the tactics that NYPD has employed. I don't have any direct experience with NYPD, but from what I've read, I have a hard time imagining how they are "a pleasure to deal with in comparison to LAPD."
Fair enough. I can see how a well-funded police dept. like NYPD would be more helpful in general, but I was thinking you meant with regard to bike rides specifically. From the news and bloggage that makes its way to this coast, it would seem that NYPD has a major thorn up its ass about NYCM, but I suppose there's more to it than that.
when was the last time you had to deal with them?? they are freaking assholes. the last few Critical Mass rides I went to in NY were in the months near the RNC - tthey were brutal chase games and seriously lame. I have many many friends that were jailed on trumped up charges tthat the NYPD could never prove, and they've confiscated 'abandoned' bikes whose owners were right there with the keys saying "I've got the key right here, I'm the owner of this bike, why are you cutting they lock and impounding it???"
LAPD and NYPD both suck as a whole, too bad there was no video of Franz getting tackled... either way - I'm glad this is getting the main stream media attention for the moment.. my Dad even forwarded me the video link!
