Are these young whippersnappers on fixies actually expressing an appreciation of my wheels? It's true I think my bike (with gears! and brakes!) is rather snazzy and I never got such comments all those years of riding a crappy mountain bike, however my dude friends have tried to tell me otherwise. I have this impulse to pat these kids on the head for their efforts.

I always make it a point to tell random, seemingly "new to biking" people that they have a nice bike no matter what their bike looks like. I figure it's just another vote of encouragement for their choice to get on a bike in the first place.

it's not a lie. you know me, I barely know anything about bikes. I'm just excited to see new people giving it a try. it's not what you ride, it's that you ride.

I have to second what Roadblock said there, I just love seeing people on a bike. Any bike.
I love to say "Hey that's a nice bike, I used to have one like it (probably true), do you want me to help you adjust the brakes /seat /handlebars /shifters /EVERYTHING... " Then proceed to work on random strangers bikes in the middle of random Asian neighborhoods.
I ride a mix of different bikes, all of them cheap, all of them wonderful. It's all good, man.
I am seeing more and more riders out and about recently with the nicer weather. Please do your best to help, encourage and educate the newest wave of riders hitting the streets.

That's an awesome approach Roadblock.
Almost EVERY bike is, or can be, a nice bike.
Either a little cleaning and lube and maybe some new tires/bars/grips will make it nice, or, well, there's always paint and craft supplies.

I've been telling them the same thing, "NICE BIKE!"
I'm not saying it sarcastically either. Unlike some of you snobs, I think the more people on bikes the better. So I rather encourage them, than belittle them (for the most part... I have made fun of a couple gaudy creations--I can't help it when I see a bike that looks my My First Sony...)
