Headset Help

I'm switching out headsets and to my luck, my old threaded headset stretched out my headtube a tiny bit so the new threadless cups don't fit in as they should. They slide right into place, versus being pressed in as they should.
My question: should I use loctite to keep the cups in place and avoid ovalizing the headtube with a loose headset? (Also I understand riding with a loose headset is dangerous.)

Answer: No! I would replace it with a new(er) threaded headset. If you want to use a new-style stem you should get an adapter. Yes, loose headsets are dangerous and will damage your frame.

If you don't care about changing it again just JB Weld it into place. Are you sure you have the right headset, though? Even on the most fucked up headtubes I've seen the new headset didn't just "slip right in".

Chynna, I love you, but seriously girl. do like dude said up there and get an adapter.
It will not only be uncomfortable and unsafe to ride, but it will eventually wreck your head tube and you'll need a whole new frame.
I mean you just don't put a threadless where a threaded is required. Get an adapter. They are cheap. Or a new threaded headset. Jesus. Treat your bike right, it will reward you.

since both threadless headsets you have go in easily, i'd suggest loctite, if you wanna remove the threadless headset later. since there's not much play, i don't see the problem. although, since the threaded headset still fits, why not just use that and press the cups back in? or maybe we can measure the cups with a caliper and find threadless cups that match?

the problem arose because she had a threadless headset on there and replaced it with a new threaded headset. when she wanted to change back to threadless, we too the threaded cups out and replaced them with the the threadless cups. we used proper tools and the problem wasn't discovered until a day later. my guess is the new threaded cups which replaced the threadless cups streached out the headtube a tiny bit.

they were both 1 inch cups. is there still a difference in sizing?

maybe in stack height, but not in diameter.
youll also need to change the race on the fork if youre chaning headsets.

so you're trying to re-use the old threadless headset, but the cups slide right in? you might want to try with a new headset that hasn't been installed yet, although from my experience, headset cups can be re-used without any problems.
how much play are you experiencing? if it's not too bad, i'd just put on some loctite and see if it gets rid of the play. if that doesn't work, time for a new frame.

yeah it's just a TINYTINY bit. it doesn't even move inside, it just scares me that i can slip it right in vs. needing to press it in.
i think i'm gonna go for the loctite.

Aluminum foil tape is the hot tip.
Available at most auto parts stores this stuff works great for filling in the gap
on stretched out headtubes. Or other components that are a bit loose.
Just cut small strips that wrap around the outside surface of the headset cup
that goes inside the frame. I've used this many times to rescue worn out framesets.
