Bicyclists injured in Mulholland Drive collision

Three people riding bicycles on Mulholland Drive suffered major injuries Monday when they collided with an 81-year-old Calabasas woman making a left turn, authorities said.
The cyclists were westbound on Mulholland Drive approaching Stokes Canyon Road at 7:30 a.m. when an eastbound Audi A-4 driven by the woman attempted to make a left turn, said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.
Investigators were on scene to determine who was at fault, Villalobos said.
Los Angeles County firefighters airlifted the three injured riders to UCLA Medical Center, Villalobos said.
The names of the Audi driver and bicycle riders were not immediately available.
A fourth cyclist suffered minor injuries and was released, authorities said.
Wasn't there suppose to be a mandatory test from the DMV for those people over the age of 70+ or something, to make sure they are still fit for the roads? Dayyum you old people, (no offense old people and of related sorts).

That's a cyclists worst nightmare, i always lock eyes with ppl making left turns and have my hands hovering over the brakes as I go through intersections but if you're over 25 MPH or so it would be pretty much impossible to avoid if someone just turned in front of you... bad times
I know! Everyone always says "oh, you have to be extra careful!" But we ARE! But if I'm coming downhill at 38mph, the chances I can stop on a dime or even slow down enough to avoid you turning left in front of me are extremely slim. I always slow down when I see a motorist preparing to turn across me because you never know what they will do. I hate that I have to slow down for them, basically giving over my right of way, but I'd rather be alive than right. (And I really like being right.)
Every time I have been "cold cocked" by a car (it stands at 4 times so far),
The car made a sudden last minute move into my path and I had no time to anticipate or react.
The ones you don't see coming are the ones to watch out for!.
Right, so if you can't see 'em, how can you watch out for 'em? Bit of conundrum there.

How about not going faster than your vehicle/brakes can handle?
Call me a dork for riding my brakes downhill but I know that if I'm doing over 20 I'll have little chance to react if there is a pothole or a crack on the road or if a car backs out of a driveway or suddenly enters the road in front of me.

that's the damn truth... I tell people all the time, use the brightest light you can possibly afford, turn it on blinker DAY and NIGHT cause drivers make split second decisions ALL THE FUCKING TIME. At least with a bright ass blinking light there is some hope.

I frequently ride on a flat at over 20mph, and on a downhill at even faster. I keep my hands on the brakes, ready for evasive maneuvers at all times. But no matter how vigilant you are, a motor vehicle can still come out of nowhere and clip you or hit you. It doesn't matter how fast you can brake.
By your comment, those guys should have been able to brake behind Dr. Thompson's SUV in time to prevent their injuries. It's their fault for not being able to brake in time. Or like these guys on Mulholland---is their fault because they couldn't brake in front a vehicle that left turned in front of them. No, it's complete bullshit.
Right, we can take all the precautions in the world, in the end, drivers just need to fucking yield when they are fucking supposed to. (Sorry for all the swearing but it FUCKING pisses me off.)
Wow, of course the people in the la times comment section are blaming the cyclists and turning it into a "no bikes on the road" thing. This comment especially caught my eye:
"MAYBE RIDING A BICYCLE IN A BIG CITY LIKE LOS ANGELES IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD CONSIDER NOT DOING. GO TO MONTANA OR OREGON."
There are always thousands of comments like that. You just have to ignore and remember that most of the people who comment on the LAT are ignorant trolls.
It doesn't matter what those stupid people THINK, the LAW says we have a right to the road.
