Is it a bad idea to ride Glassell Park at night?

So I found a thread here about someone who got bike jacked in Glassell Park just last month. My bf and I were planning on riding our bikes to The Verdugo and now I'm wondering if that's such a good idea. We don't have anything fancy. Just a Schwinn mountain bike from Target and a clunky Raleigh. Is Glassell Park a neighborhood I should avoid after dark?

a lot of places aren't so safe.... stick to the main streets and try not to ride during the drunk hour. keep your eyes peeled for characters who could walk towards you and push you off your bike whether you are riding or not. dont try to hard to resist. better your bike than your life.

yeah stick to main streets. do not put your self in compromising situations. remember these days not only do you have to worry about people but coyotes too.

Overall I want to believe that most people are safe in that area. I grew up near here. It was very dangerous in the 80's, but then it got better. Glassell Park is Avenues territory. I do happen to ride alone sometimes through that area late at night. I ride quickly and try not to linger anywhere where people are hanging out. But, try to avoid doing this. Ride in a group if you can and don't hang around.
I'm no expert, but it seems as if stuff is getting worse lately.

no its not a bad idea. ride your bike bike but since you are a girl its safe to have a bit of protection anywhere you go pick up some pepper spray.

UMMMM it doesnt matter if you are a girl or not, chemical mace or pepper spray are both great ideas to carry.

Yup. I carry pepper spray and a expandable baton when i ride @ night on my own. Come get some bike thieves. unless you have a gun, dont even try to take my shit..
I figure better to be prepared than unprepared...

A friend of mine used to live in Glassell park. (Little white girl). We used to smash around late at night on the tandem by ourselves.
No-one ver fucked with us but the cops would always slow way down and stare at us like we were insane when they drove by.
One time they stopped and asked us if we were lost. When my friend told them she lived just around the corner they laughed hard.
Theres a bunch of different gangs in that area and they mostly just fuck with each other.

+1 on the pepper spray. Up to a 2.5oz container is legal.
Do not carry collapsible batons unless you have a CCW permit. Getting busted for having a baton / concealed weapon is silly.

Yeah ask Snoop. he try take one the plane.
Other than that I ride all over Long Beach and Southbay at all hours and the only hassle I ever get is from the cops.
Course I'm old and ugly and ride mostly rust buckets.

If you look like prey - then you're prey. Own your city, including the cops and gangstahs that comprise it.
besides glassell & cypress parque is pretty harmless, comparatively speaking.

People are such pansies if they're scared of coyotes trying to make dinner out of them.
I would be more concerned with the rabid Doberman that thinks I'm a can of Ol'Roy.
