what "type" of bicycles are there?

and how would i know which one is the best for me?

When you mean building your own bicycle, what do you mean?

If you want to do it from scratch, try here - http://www.bikeschool.com/frame.htm

If you want to build up a bike on your own, try craigslist or google one of the bike co-ops (bikerowave, bike kitchen, bike oven).

Types of bicycles:
beach cruiser
BMX
MTB
hybrid
road bike - road/touring/tri
fixie
tandem

A road bike is probably your best bet, but if you don't like shifting, fixies are fun too.
