considering many of you are nerdy computer whiz kids (i kid, i kid) i figured i should ask here.
my laptop, its being screwy.
everythign works fine except for these two problems:
1. internet works for a few minutes, then says that it can't find a connection.
i have symantec antivirus and a little red question mark appears next to the symantec icon in the task tray. when clickingon it, says that the "symantec common client http proxy" has been disabled. restart computer. it keeps doing that, dont know how to fix it.
2. the damn computer won't shut down or go to sleep. restarting is fine. but when shutting down or going to sleep, it gets to the "starting sleep/shutting down..." window, and then just freezes
help me internet godzzzz

Install
Ubuntu, and don't use symantec antivirus.
There is also a huge community, and a wealth of information, on the
Ubuntu forums, for Ubuntu, and is also helpful for other Ubuntu related and Debian based distributions.

Yes you would have to back up all your Data first. you can try doing ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew to reset your IP settings maybe that would help. you should also use AVG instead of Norton I recommend it to all my Clients. I haven't installed Ubuntu on a system with Windows previously on it... but from what I hear there are some migration tools. However it will need to reformat the drive to reinstall, so you'll want to make a backup of your files, which is a good idea to do even if you don't reinstall.
You might be able to run Photoshop using Wine, which is a Windows emulator for programs. I run IE6, and IE7 using Wine, for example. I haven't tried running Photoshop using it though.
I would also suggest giving the GNU Image Manipulation Program (G.I.M.P.) a look at for doing color correction, cropping, blurring, dodging, burning, etc. You can install it from the Application's menu in Ubuntu. There is a pretty cool plugin for it, that does liquid rescaling, examples:
http://liquidrescale.wikidot.com/en:examples, and there is also a variation of G.I.M.P. that is supposed to replicate the feel of photoshop.... however I haven't used it.... it's called
GIMPshop.

Hey if you're serious about fixing this problem.
Something that you have is conflicting with something else you have.
PCs are notorious for this and why I gave up on them... as I used to build them.
But look: it's nothing you did but what you didn't know would happen when two programs like you're symantec and your internet connection got together or maybe something else affected the relationship unknowst to you.
To solve this would take the skills of a master ninja a few minutes just to analyze.
It could be one small registry file that just needs to be deleted... but finding it is the needle in a haystack.
I don't think you want to go there.
My advice is that if you have already spent a few days on the prob... best to cut your losses... make sure your data is backed up... Not just your files... but bookmarks, contact lists, calendars, quickbooks stuff, think about how you use your computer and how it has remembered you. Have all your program install discs accounted for. Or you'll lose the program.
If you're not sure... This is a good lesson.
Losing shit isn't the end of the world.
Once that's on an external.
Format your Hard Drive and reinstall your operating system.
Add one program at a time. Reboot, use and check for any conflicts between to make sure you're not recreating the problem.
This sounds like a lot of work.
It is.
This process gets your computer back up as fast as possible without advanced knowledge of your operating system.
If you still are unsure... hit the phones.
I've spent hours on them talking to Microsoft, symantec, Netgear, adobe, etc, etc.
If they solve it. It comes down to them finding that little erroneous file.
When incidents like this happen... I've learned that your computer is due for some spring cleaning and the mess has gotten so deep you can't even open the door.

If you have the right hardware on your laptop you can run Mac OS on it. I have a macbook but i make pc desktops at home that run the Mac OS. I save a ton of money that way.
I would like to run linux but their is too much work for me to do to get less applications running. Mac has *nix commands available if you wanna nerd out or just a simple user interface for those that just want to point, click and drag..
I love mac but they are too expensive.... So i just look for compatible hardware and build them myself.
Works really well.
