LA River

Sooo I want to go from Los Angeles to Long Beach and figure the only practical way to do this is the LA River..
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but...Is this thing safe? I know it goes through some bad areas, even if it's like 5% safe, i do NOT want to go.
Keep in mind I'm a small girl with a pink bike and lack extraordinary "Oh shit get me out of here" strength.
Also I hear there's construction on it a lot. Knowing my luck it'd be closed off in Compton and I'd be dead. Or worse, without a bike. So I thought I'd pose this to you guys. We all know what a liar the internet can be. Will I be metroing it today?

Ohhh, nevermind. I'm going to ride to Hermosa and take a bus East.
Still would be nice to get any first hand knowledge but I think I already know.
Thx for reading this!

Entrance begins where Altlantic blvd crosses the river. You have to get over to the other side of the river when you pass Imperial Hwy to get to Long Beach.

google map Altantic Blvd and District Ave.
it's rough getting through downtown to that spot. I take Alameda all the way over the washington bridge, left on PAcific Circle, Left on Leonis, Leonis becomes District, When you get to Atlantic it is on the left.

ive been curious about this as well.
there's a path that goes from the azusa area down to long beach and i heard its pretty cool but there are some sketchy areas.
how bad are these areas?

You are talking about San Gabriel River bike path. That's a long stretch that ends of in Seal Beach. (Next to Long Beach). It's not that sketchy, unless you ride by yourself after dark.

I think they are both safe. Just riding after dark and alone could be sketchy.

Any of the paths are always safer with a buddy. When I don't have a riding partner I bring Mr. Pepper Spray along with me.
That being said, there is no shortage of solo riders, especially during the week. Use the same precautions that you use on the street. Stay very aware of what's going on in front of you and behind you, especially be cautious of groups on foot.

Be sure to use the phrase, "ON YOUR LEFT!"
I learned the hard way.

The San Gabriel River bike Path runs about 38 miles from Duarte to Seal Beach.
I've ridden this route in daylight, at 2 am and in the rain!
I mostly ride solo and I am a guy.
I've never had even a hint of trouble, but I've heard stories from others who have.
Try to ride with others and be aware of your surroundings.
The trail is clean and well paved most of the way.
The L.A. River path is a little more sketchy in areas of Huntington Park/Maywood. If I were a single woman, I would not ride it, daytime or night.
With a group, its a great way to get from the city to the beach. No cars, no lights and not many other people are out there.

cool, thanks for the info.
the reason i ask is that ive heard horror stories about being mugged by bums and people always getting shit jacked near the end of the route.

Brittany,
you should keep an eye out for the LA river ride next year... that way you learn the path in a big group and feel safer.... keep an eye out for a ride since a couple of them go from DTLA to long beach using predominantly the river trail...

I live in long beach so i ride the LA River all the time. It's perfectly safe during the day. You see families with their kids all the time. There's no construction now, those websites you see that say that are from like 3 or 4 years ago.

Riding the LA river is one of my favorite rides in L.A.. Miles and miles of riding with no cars, no stop lights, no stop signs, just go and go and go. I love it. I do not recommend night riding without a group and someone in that group with a damn good headlight at the front (underpasses are pitch black at night). During the day it's pretty chill, plenty of people out, solo riders, small groups, people walking their dog (watch out for those dogs), I think it's a pretty safe and enjoyable ride. At imperial highway you need to take ramp and cross over to other side to continue to Long Beach and I believe there is now a sign directing you to do that, but just just in case, keep an eye for that, the cross streets are labeled with signs at the bottom of the over passes.
