Blighted By A Toxic Legacy of Oil

Join Amazon Watch, the Achuar, environmental activist Daryl Hannah and
others for 2 important days of action April 30 and May 2 as we hold Occidental Petroleum (OXY) to account for its toxic legacy in the Peruvian Amazon!

30 years of oil production in the northern Amazon of Peru has left indigenous peoples including the Achuar, who have lived in the area since time immemorial, to suffer from malnutrition, sickness and social disruption. Since 1971, Los Angeles based Occidental Petroleum, using practices outlawed in the U.S., pumped an average of 800,000 gallons
per day of toxic oil wastewaters into the Achuar people’s local rivers with appalling consequences for their communities.

Many have no alternative sources of water and are forced to drink, bathe and eat from their polluted river water. Heavy metals and organic compounds have accumulated in the food chain causing acute health problems
and deaths in local communities. The Achuar have filed a lawsuit against Occidental demanding they clean up the areas they contaminated. Occidental has so far refused to take responsibility for the damage.

It's time for Oxy to clean up and pay up!

We're going to wear HazMat suits April 30 and perform a mock "clean up" of
their building.
