If you've got horizontal dropouts on your frame, it's easy to go fixed by adjusting where the rear wheel is in the dropout.
If you've got vertical dropouts, you either have to drop a ton of money on a wheel with an eccentric hub, or you have to go with singlespeed (with a chain tensioner or a lucky combo of chainring and cog), where chain tension isn't as critical.
