RFID chips for bikes

It may be a bit too Big Brother-ish but this scheme sounds interesting.

Problem would be where to put the thing. A steel seat tube sounds too much like a pretty good RF shield to me. Thick blob of epoxy somewhere?

I like the idea. Yeah there is a big brotherish aspect to worry about, but then again if you carry a metro TAP card or a passport, those have RFID in em too.

Except RFID chips aren't powered, and can only be triggered from a relatively short distance (about 40 feet). Pretty much if you're close enough to trigger an RFID reader, you ought to be able to retrieve your bike without it.
A tiny GPS chip on the other hand...

we can put a RFID chip in to a spoke card, and the music trailer can have a tracking device. we can study flock formations
