The Furnace Creek 508 is one of the most intense endurance bike races in the world. 508 miles through Death Valley, and you must finish within 48 hours.
Combining elevation and distance, it is the equivalent of three stages of the Tour de France. Chris Kostman is a RAAM vet and set a record for biking from SF to LA in about 20 hours, and he hosts this little event every year. He also puts on the Death Valley Doubles and i into raw/vegan culture.
If you are interested in doing this event, I strongly recommend you crew it. This year, I am supporting an Italian guy named Luigi by driving the support van, tossing water bottles back and forth, watching his nutrition intake, etc. He's got tons of experience, doing a 1000 km in Sicily this year and doing RAO (Race Across Oregon) a few years back. Unfortunately, our other crew member had a hard time getting in touch with him and has recently canceled.
I need to find someone to help me drive and keep Luigi motivated. If you are interested in helping out, let me know. We need to be in Valencia on Friday afternoon to register and do vehicle inspection, October 3. The ride starts Saturday morning and I am guessing he will finish late on Sunday night. The official end and breakfast will be Monday AM in 29 Palms.

This will be my fourth year in a row on the 508 course. (3 times crewing, once in a 4 person relay) It is an amazing experience, and really puts what's possible on a bike into perspective. It's very satisfying to help someone complete this amazing feat of endurance. So anybody thinking about helping out DO IT!
What's Luigi's totem? I'm crewing for Brian "Emperor Moth" Davidson. Se ya out on the course!
Also, If anyone wants a copy of "Eat!Sleep?Bikes!" I've got a stack of like 20.
Also, it definitely wouldn't hurt for you to have two more crew members, three works real well. somebody can catch a nap while one drives and one feeds.
Do it people! It's amazing! Death valley in the middle of the night is great!
Wow, I haven't been on the forums in a week. It's great that so many ridazz are going to be there. Luigi's totem is Buzzard. We posted in the 508 forums too and found 2 awesome crewmates.I'll see u guys there. And I'd love to get a copy of that story, max. I just read Morgan's story and I think u crewed for him.
Steve and I will be at the FC 508 crewing for Del the "Spider", one of the oldest racers this year. It is our first time crewing for this race and we are also very EXCITED. Hope to see you all their:
SC NOMAD
ALEC
MAX THE HEATHEN
and all other M.R.
:)
and any of you that are going to be there should come say yo at the check-in or the pre-race meeting, etc. I think with two solo riders, a team rider plus crew, Swarm! will have about 10 people out there. We are the ones who will be laughing at inappropriate times and making jokes about mustaches. Should be easy to spot.
