Am I the only person here that had never heard of Ragbrai before?
Ragbrai is a week long 500 mile ride that takes place every year at the end of July in Iowa. It's been going on since the early 70s.

10,000 riders attend officially and several thousand more crash it.
The registration fee is $125 but since the registration deadline was April 1st our only option would be to crash it.

 I posted a question on the Ragbrai forum about night riding. I got a range of answers from reasoned discouragement to "stay out of our state" to this very flattering response:

In my club, I brought up a night ride route after reading about some of your rides from downtown LA to San Diego etc. the idea got a wierd response. I have told many hard core roadies about your site and they have checked it out. But you are the most unique of anywhere and nothing similiar exists in Portland Vancouver or Durrango. You guys rock and the rest of the planet isn't quite ready for you yet. There are numerous party teams that ride this however as riders you would be starting a new 21st century lore team like what the Bad Boys started (another group that is considered rogue that rides self contained dressed in black with a bar and other essentials mounted on their bikes).

You guys should ride and introduce some real urban effect to this here Ragbrai.
