Awooo: Full Moon Cycle
Thread started by trickmilla at 12.1.10 - 5:04 pm

We meet every lunar cycle and ride in the direction of the moon.
We stop for light urban picnic under the light of the full moon, then ride on either home or another desticnation
.
The day, time, and meeting point of this ride will change every month depending on the moon and other factors.

No Ridaa Left Behind.

This month is the first one:

I was going to put this off until next year, but the next full moon falls on the winter solstice (the longest night of the year) AND it will be the first full lunar eclipse in over 1000 days.

A good resource for all the upcoming lunar phases, and everything is in PST. http://www.griffithobservatory.org/skysun.html

Hey,
Braydon, I'd love to talk to you about your past FM rides.
Are you going to be at any rides this weekend?

I most likely won't be going on any rides this weekend, or soon, so here is a rundown of my experience with organizing a ride every full moon for about a year in 2009:

One of the first rides was on the same night as the Midnight Ridazz second Friday ride, which was starting just a few blocks away. We made shirts. Some people stayed, some went to the MR ride. We rode up to the lookout point at Montecito Heights around the radio tower, away from the city and into nature. One of the rides we went also to Montecito Height after it rained, and it was really muddy, we ended up washing our bikes off, and eating donuts. Many of the first rides started at the top of the parking structure across from Disney Hall.

There was only two of us on one of the rides, and we didn't really ride much, it was most likely because I didn't post it up. Well I did post it, however I posted it as "Full Moon Hustle", I got an email from Roadblock that he changed it to "Full Moon Ride", so I figured I would just take it down since the flyer said Full Moon Hustle. I still think a really fast paced ride on the night of a full moon is an awesome idea, even though it wasn't all that serious.

After that ride, I got in contact with Jean, and we did a combo Mom Ridaz Tuesday / Full Moon Dash, a rebirth and change. We ended up also meeting with Taco Tuesday on the westside, which was pretty cool hanging out on Moustache Bridge and people playing firesoccer. After this everytime there was a full moon on a Tuesday, we would do a combo ride again! Since then we always started at the Echo Park Boat House.

On one of the rides I was completely broke, didn't have much time to think about a route, but I did make artwork for a spoke card, and a friend helped me out with getting them printed. I wanted to do a route with the maximum number of turns in the shortest possible total distance. Ended up doing like 172 + 2 turns in less than 15 miles. I didn't ride the route before so it was as much a surprise to me as it was to everyone else. I just looked at a map, our starting place was at the Echo Park Boat House, so I pick the shortest distance to the next intersection and repeated that 173 times making sure never to cross over a previous path. We ended up going up some really steep hills, down some really crazy hills, going through some really cool streets, and some crappy ones. Really cool alleys, stairways. It was pretty great training, my legs were really sore the next day, and we really learned a lot about the area!

The largest turn out, we had about 50 people come out. It was on a Saturday night, and I put a lot of planning into the route. The route was based on passing by places where people have been hit by cars and killed or injured. I figure it's easier to remember places when there are more things we can use to remind us of them, so riding them is one way. That way we remember areas to be more careful and be on alert for cars and drivers who may not be looking for cyclists. I remember the locations but I don't remember the names of the intersections now, that well. Wilshire / Santa Monica, The bridge just north of echo park lake and around there, and Los Feliz and Riverside are some that I remember. There was a group of Christians that came out the the ride, which I thought was kinda funny. I'm not Christian, and have only stepped foot in a church once or twice, but I thought it was cool that they would come to the ride. There are many religious, and cultures that have symbolism with the moon. So it's a pretty cool common ground between everyone. We rode through Hollywood, and ended up in Westwood at the Westwood park. We had a fire in one of the pits and hung out under the moonlight.

In fall, we did a "noise ride" and we rode to a hidden spot up in Debs Park. I had a sound system I played some music, and I asked for everyone to bring something to play. A photography friend took some photos that time, and the photos almost looked like it was day, because of all the light. So there are some great opportunities for photography on nights with a full moon.

Towards the spring, we did a "Tour de Parks" and we visited many different parks in Los Angeles. Quick stops, 15min or so, and we would take off to the next. Most of us have been to the locations before, but going to them all in one night was new, and was pretty fun. Now here is one of the downers is that many parks are technically "closed" when we ride to them. This is something I disagree with, however rules are important, but every once in awhile the rules are wrong and need to be changed, but they usually are in place for a reason. The really cool thing is that not once did we ever have issues, conflicts, run-ins with the police.

The last ride that we did was last new years! It was a full moon, on new years, and it was the second full moon in the month in Los Angeles. And that's were PST times come in! I didn't plan for it to be the last, and realized it after, but I figured what better time to end than on a blue moon on new years!

There was also a Full Moon Century that was posted here an Midnight Ridazz in 2009 that someone else put up, they had their own website and everything. I got in contact with Roadblock about a possible conflict of names, and his recommendation was to get in contact with them. So I did that, and their opinion was that one word out of three would be a big enough difference, I disagreed, they left it as is on the Midnight Ridazz website. Their ride was something you had to pay for to enter, the money went towards a cause. The Full Moon Ride was totally free. I got a call once asking if it was a paid event, around that same time, so that was one of my concerns. So there is a bit of a "benefit" attached to "full moon" as well, as far as I know. Their ride was on the day of a full moon, it was during the day, I think it had to do with a Jewish celebration. Also I searched through the threads of the Midnight Ridazz forum, and there was also a mountain biking ride that happened for a while on the night of a full moon.

The moon is always changing, and always around, it's like water. As Bruce Lee said, "be water my friend".

i would reschedule for today to see the lunar eclipse
but it with the rain ... and more importantly the cloud cover
it doesn't seem like it would make sense.

Tuesday is supposed to be 95% cloud cover and rain, so perhaps its not in the cards for us this month.

I only made it to a few of Braydon's Full Moon rides, but they were some of the best rides I've ever been on. Especially the New Year's Blue Moon - that night was just magical. Miss you & your creative routes Braydon! Haven't been on the social rides myself much lately, but hope to see you around soon!

All that aside, the full moon itself makes for a fantastic backdrop for riding. Hopefully I can make it to one of your full moon rides too, Trickmilla.

I'm more of the opinion that there should BE a full moon ride, than that I should "have" my own full moon ride .

With that said, I'm planning on joining The Passage Ride tonight.

Its close to what I might have planned and both in intent and geography ... only with better execution. :)

Anybody interested in collaborating on future full moon rides please let me know.
OR ... if you want to do your own full moon ride that doesn't involve me ... please don't hesitate. in a city pushing 10milliion residents, there can never be too many bike rides.
