old helmets

I need advice from the MR community.....
I have 3 Bell helmets that I would like to give away. One is an old Arc, universal fit (54-62cm, blue), and in fine shape but old, well over the industry recommended 5 year 'expiration date'. The other is a ~2 year old Sweep, size large (59-63cm, yellow/black), that I crashed in and has a few small cracks. The last one is my girlfriend's old helmet and I'm not sure what model it is, some kinda univesal fit Bell, red color, old but ok condition. The foam pads are decent and we wear these all the time as backup helmets. I even wash them occasionally so they don't stink.
The responsible adult cyclist in me says I should destroy both of these helmets because they are not safe and will not protect your skull properly if you crash. But the environmentalist/freegan/Ridaa in me says I should give it to a cyclist who can't afford any helmet because an old or damaged helmet is still 100% better than no helmet. Especially if you're one of those helmetless clowns riding a brakeless trackbike, right? (no offense brakeless riders)
So anyway, what's the general feeling on using old or damaged helmets? Should I smash them? Or can I give them away and try not to worry about some kid getting hurt while wearing my old helmet? I've seen people wearing much worse......
If you want one, and accept the fact that it is not as good as a new helmet, text me (310-995-4585) and I'll give it to you for free if you pick it up in Venice. First come first served and I won't post or e-mail you a picture.

yes! the hanging planter idea is fantastic!
I like smashing stuff, but I don't like wasting stuff, y'know?
Maybe I can grow some medicinal herbs in it.
sweet, thanks
