Disagree with that statement, sometimes the odds are against you and the way of the fists just won't work with multiple aggressors already armed with guns.
But, as far as rides with large numbers are concerned, why does anyone have to even worry about getting assaulted in any form?
The way I see it, the rides are supposed to be one of the few, peaceful and fun activities that we could all go to and let our brains catch some air for a minute.
You wanna pack some heat? Do it when you're going to be riding solo for the entire duration of your ride.
When coming to a big ride, leave the aggression, the large knives, and the small-arms at home.

Just bring a good attitude and positive energy. You'll be amazed how well that works. Riding around with a concealed weapon is a stupid bad idea.

Except for Nat'l Trails HWY on a solo ride to Barstow, the methheads sleeping by the Mojave river are about as confrontational as a mosquito.
All other times though, slip some silly-string into that shoulder-rig if you want to feel bad-ass.

I've got a pocket knife but I don't bring it with the intent to defend myself. It's just there for when I might need to cut something, not someone.

Another, honest form of protection that works for me out here is riding to work while everyone else is driving(afternoon), then riding home when only old people and working people are driving(6AM).
I would say the hours of between 7PM and 4AM are when the inebriated and/or aggressive young-adult crowd are out causing shit for anything that isn't bigger than them.
Since I'm still in the middle of civilization(to an extent), then a ulock and my truckers' tire-thumper work just as well.
As far as firearms for defense in California goes, the laws here turn them into a sort of personal, "doomsday-switch" for the victim and the criminal, with the victim getting an equal amount of shit as well.
If anything, shooting a well-maintained weapon on a range is good stress-release, but after reading into it, it's becoming a general headache to legally harm criminals in this state.

Yea, there are a few cheaper pepper sprays on the market with poor heads and are generally low pressure (Those are commonly under $10). I tested a few in an open field and liked this one ($30). It's high pressure and shoots about 12 feet. It also leaves an orange residue on the target as a marker.
