not much of a solution but i lock mine to the sides of the rack to the racks in front of the library. almost always free. i can gt the frame and the both wheels.

they have pretty janky bike racks depending the location. the ones near the library are okay. the one behind the cashiers office. the better racks but more hidden and the ones near drescher's hall. i think there are five(?) locations total on campus to lock up

It looks like they just moved the racks in front of Drescher in front of the photo studios. What do you mean you can only lock your wheels? You can catch your frame and front wheel easily with a u-lock (a real u-lock, not that mini hipster thing). Or you can take off your front wheel and lock your rear, frame, and front wheel.

Velocipede

the "mini hipster u-lock" works way better than the bigger ones. smaller u makes it harder to jam a car jack in there to pry the lock open, making it harder to steal your bike. your "real u-lock" makes it a whole hell of a lot easier to open up like that, unless youre locking up more than one frame to fill that giant void.

"works way better"

Not if you're trying to lock your front wheel AND frame to something, and not if you need to lock your frame to something that is wider than 2 inches.

@smc students who ride to school

If you're that worried about it, bitch to the administration. I did that at my school and we got a brand new set of racks. the good kind. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Due to the ackward dimensions of my frame, a large U-Lock is the only thing that will do for my rig.
Luckily, the combined girth of the frame and wheels locked to the rack will prevent any guttersnipe from trying to even pop that thing free.

However, I'm somewhat limited when there's no rack and only fenceposts.
In that case, I'll find a concealable location that's a bitch to get into and hide/lock it there.

pfft. I've been locking my bike up with the regular u-lock since before they even made those little ones and I've gotten along just fine. I've never had a bike or any wheels stolen. Not getting jacked is just common sense. If you pass your lock under the bottom of the rack so the part you put the key into is on the bottom there's no way someone could put a car jack or whatever in there. If you park your bike in a high traffic part of campus that's not near the street you'll be okay. I'm not just talking shit on hipsters, I know those locks suck because I used to sell them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can only lock your frame or wheel with those unless you want to carry another cable or chain. If you do, you better get the strong one that no one can cut though (which weighs a ton). By the time you've done that you could have just bought the regular lock. Or you can just lock your frame like I see a lot of people doing and hope that thieves don't start carrying 15mm wrenches.

I was fucking late to class this morning because I was running around looking for a place to lock up, but I couldn't because every available hand rail and such was taken other riders. I finally found a place but I then asked my teacher if I can bring my bike into the classroom. It's fucking BS

Like Duderina said, COMPLAIN! Alert the administration!!
The campus has had so many renovations this past year. I believe they are trying to "green" it up with the Any-Line-Anytime, "Global citizenship," Culture garden, etc. Bike parking stress definitely doesn't encourage students to lessen their carbon footprint by riding a bike to school.

When I was there, I would usually park my bike behind the Bursars office, across the street at Sustainable Works (someone I knew was usually working by the window over-looking the racks), or on the hand rails by the math bungalows.

Let me know send me your private e-mail adress and I will let you know where I live at later.

Are so many people riding that there's a bicycle parking problem on campus? I can't believe it. The police can give you a ticket if you lock up on anything other than a bike rack. We really need more and more secure racks. Maybe they'll put some in with the new parking structure that will be ready in 4 years or so.

I had a cop that left a ticket on my bike for parking it on a sign that was not a bike rack but the bike rack right net to it was completely full and there was nothing that I could do. He left the ticket taped on my handlebars so when I walked up and saw it it had my bikes info on it and nothing else I threw it on the ground after writing screw this get more bike racks on it and left it on the ground.

Last semester, they put a chain on my bike and i had to call a number to have it removed. when he showed up, i apologized, but he still gave me this crazy lecture about how i was lucky he hadnt cut my u-lock off, and that he had tried to remove it. when i got back the whole class was laughing.

it actually may be something we need to address with the school. he's out of his god-damn mind.

this happened last semester. i was on break at my night class when i noticed someone had chained my bike to the railing. it was locked up in front of the HSS building, not on a bike rack--my bad. i called the number on the note during break, and go back to class after ten minutes. the "cop" shows up after the lecture has resumed, and asks if anyone called about the bike. i rush out, not wanting to disrupt the class.

so he begins to tell me in a very loud tone of voice that im not allowed to lock up there, and i agree. for whatever reason, he felt it was necessary to give me a lecture. wanting to get back to class, i just kept telling him, "youre right. im sorry." i suppose he didnt take me seriously, because he went on to say that i was lucky he didnt have the engineer cut the lock off. he also said he had tried to remove it himself. finally, he unlocks it and i move my bike.

when i got back to class, my professor said something to the effect of "it takes all sorts." and everyone laughed. a few minutes later, the security guard appears on the other side of the window and begins riding in circles. i stare at him, he stops and appears to stare back at me, then rides off. it was the most bizarre thing.

on my way home, i noticed my wheel had a wobble, and i surmised that this was because he had tried to pull my lock off. (i had it locked between the frame and rear wheel.) since he admitted to tampering with my lock, i called his supervisor the next day, who told me it was impossible that an SMCPD officer would ever try to tamper with a student's lock.

i called the supervisor's supervisor the next day who agreed to take a report. one of my classmates had heard the exchange regarding the u-lock, but i decided it wasnt worth pursuing. i saw him today, but i guess he didnt recognize me. someone really just needs to tell him to calm down. let me know if you want me to tell my story in person. im sure it will be hard to believe.

yeah man they did do that to me the next day when I was out and I was not going to the farmers market that time I was up the road but everyone knows that damn thing takes up all the bike parking. around the area so I locked up on a fence right next to the cofee shop I was at. I was outside so I saw them do it. I did not walk over to the cop called his supervisor and watched as his phone rang and he took the lock off and the cop was looking around I waved at him and he snarled at me. But the supreivisor I talked to was fine with it as long as you park it next to somewhere that has all the other bike racks that are stuffed with peoples bikes.

Why are you all doing this? Yes, some of the SMCPD officers are jerks but can you blame them if they have to deal with little punks all day? I know bicycling is about freedom and everything but you gotta be responsible. What if people parked their cars and motorcycles wherever they wanted on campus? Lock your shit up on the racks, there's enough spots. You might have to walk, but if you can't handle a short walk then you shouldn't be riding a bicycle anyway.

it's not that. The problem is that the racks suck and they've been rearranged in a way that makes them even shittier. Before the racks weren't lined side-by-side so there was space to lock the frame, rear wheel, and front wheel together with one lock at the ends of the racks. Now you can only lock a wheel! Some people get the frame and front wheel by getting the rack between the wheel and downtube, but not ever bike has clearance for that (I know mine don't). My bag is heavy and I'd rather not tow more weight in locks, so I will continue locking to whatever rails since I cannot safely and conveniently lock to the racks.

here are the problems

1. there is a shortage of bike parking during the middle of the day
2. the available bike racks do not allow for secure locking of a bike
3. bike racks are located in inconvenient areas
4. CAMPUS POLICE ARE UNREASONABLE AND THREATEN TO DAMAGE STUDENT'S PROPERTY!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so people let's not be dicks because some psycho security guard was mean to us. Happened to me too. It's probably mainly this one guy, who obviously has some mental deficiency. When I say "mental deficiency, I do mean this. He probably doesn't have the emotional capacity to do anything else, so let's not get the guy fired. He just needs to CALM THE FUCK DOWN and stop THREATENING STUDENTS' PROPERTY.

If we calmly organize and ask the administration, I'm sure they'll have no problem clearing this up and explaining the rules of operation to this guy. It's stupid, but it NEEDS TO BE DONE!

It looks like we just got a bunch of new bike racks. They look great! Now there's plenty of parking for everyone. For some reason though I still see people locking up to things that aren't bike racks. Over on the west side of Drescher Hall I saw a bike locked to the gas meter pipes. Why? Over by the photo studios I see some fixie locked to the hand rail just across from the great new bike parking. I'm not usually on campus today and I happy to see so many people riding to campus. It's about time! But lock your bikes up properly and get a good lock.

Well, while we're on the subject of discrimination I'd like to talk about the "bike lane" on Pearl. Are any of you guys frustrated that the bike lane that runs from SMC to Lincoln is clogged with cars parked in it? It's full of people parking their cars and waiting for people to open up a parking space. I began riding there a few days ago because I have a class right next to Pearl. So I ask, why are these people allowed to do this? Should we complain that they are impeding traffic?
