so all my mechanics are at interbike. let's get some input here. you want real bike discussion fine.
1" threaded headset has a starnut? wtf, i removed my stem the other day not to find a quill but a star nut holding my stem down. now i can't find a shorter replacement stem because it either has the quill attached, and just putting a top cap on it wouldn't work because there is no actual steerer coming out. suggestions?
reply
i dont think you're supposed to use a star nut in a carbon steerer...

the way you get it in there is hammer it in. the way you get it it out is no different.

i get my compression nut out by using an allen wrench and turning counter clockwise

i guess my real question is, does it make sense that there is a star/compression nut in a threaded stem. i can't find anything about the combo. or is my headset actually threadless. if so where the f* is the steerer tube.

its not supposed to come up like that but you could try putting in the bolt upside down and a washer on the bottom of the stem to try and pull it though. if not you will have to pull it up. which sounds dangerous with carbon.
