Wanna get Paid to Teach Kids about Bicycles??

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone on here has an interest in teaching kids about bicycles. I run a Educational Enrichment Program at an elementary school and was thinking about offering a bicycle class to the students. It would be a once weekly, 8 week session (more if it's successful) class for 2 hours once a week. The ages range from 5 to 12 years old and curriculum would depend on the teacher (you) and what your idea's were. I was thinking of having bicycle safety, bicycle law and bicycle building as part of the curriculum, where kids would get to dismantle and rebuild entire bikes. Also they would get to learn the basics like how to change a flat, etc. Something to note is my specific school is Topanga Elementary (so you would need to drive, or be willing to bike up to Topanga..scarrryyyy), but there are other schools in Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City, and West LA that might be interested in having this class as well. Also, you would have to be over 18 and have a background check. On the good side, the pay is good ($30/hour) and you would be getting paid for doing something you like doing anyway! If interested, please post on here or email me at SadieG@starinc.org.
Thanks guys!

I can't teach people. I just get really frustrated and start raising my voice.

The League of American Bicyclists has a certification program for cycling instructors. I would recommend trying to get a League Certified Instructor or LCI if you can. The two people who run CICLE are LCIs and might be able to help.

Hey that's a great idea! I will contact them when I know the class is a go. I have to go through a few different people in order to finalize approval for this class, and so far everyone has said YES! and are excited to offer this to the students. One more very important person has to OK this idea and I will find out this week. I thank everyone who has emailed me and am excited that so many people are supportive and eager to teach kids. I think it's a great way to empower our youth! I'll post again when I find out more!
Thanks,
Sadie

The LCIs where I live are really good at working with kids in school. They set up Bike Rodeos and stuff like that, and make sure the kids understand the rules of the road and how to ride safely in the streets. Safety is huge part of the training.

You're hired! ha ha
But on a serious note, I love volunteers, but this would definitely be a paid gig. Unfortunately, volunteers often sort of come and go as they please, and since this class would have set times, days and eager students waiting, the teacher has to be reliable and able to commit to the job. If you wouldn't mind getting paid, shoot me an email. I am waiting on the final person to approve the class and then I will start looking for teachers!

Sounds like something I'd be interested in since I'm only good at teaching people how to operate vehicles in general.
Everything else, not so much.

Another cool thing to promote would be a "bike buddy" program to encourage kids to pair up (experienced and less experienced) and ride their bikes to and from school.

Hi Guys! So the Bicycle building class is definitely happening. The First class will be the week of November 23. Not sure yet, which day of the week. The location is Topanga Elementary school. The hours will be from 2:15 to 3:15 and from 3:15 to 4:15 OR from 3:15 to 4:15 and from 4:15 to 5:15, depending on what day of the week we choose. For now it is only one day per week, until we build it's popularity. The potential for expansion is HUGE because if it's popular and successful (which means a lot of kids want to sign up) then other schools will want this class too. Our enrichment afterschool program has locations in over 60 elementary schools across Los Angeles, btw. Some other requirements for the job is that you must be over 18 years old, and legally able to work in the U.S., you must have reliable transportation (as in a car, because of having to transport supplies etc), must attend a classroom management training, excited to work with kids, able to handle groups of 14 (or less) and pass a background check. This is a great chance to teach kids something you love to do! Let me know if you are interested! Sadieg@starinc.org. Thanks!

Topanga Elementary. That's a tough spot to ride to or even drive to if you are not from the area.

No more !@#$?s? Damn you Shaddy.
Back to the subject.
I don't think the cicle.org ladies would go all the way to Topanga.
Stilline is on the sex offenders list.*
That leaves Larsen who is in Pacific Palisades.

Yes, we are pretty high up there. The person teaching would definitely need to drive because a. it's hard to bike up there b. it's impossible to bike up there with a bunch of bike parts and c. it would be gnarly to teach a bunch of kids while dripping sweat. I drive up every day from Venice (lincoln and rose area) so the person could potentially carpool. Another teacher carpools with me 5 days a week too.
