Yes this should be a great event. I am out of town that weekend but my hope is that it is successful and the city can plan on more frequent events like monthly or even weekly as they have in Bogata.

Good question--and one I've got no idea about the answer. I'm not sure there would be any hard-and-fast plan in advance of where ridazz will be headed. That's kind of the idea, I suppose. I mean, the route is only 7.5 miles, which, to a person on a bike is pretty short, so it's more about enjoying the public space, which to me, means riding for a bit, talking it up with some of my fellow citizens, sitting in the grass for a bit, getting something to eat, then doing some more riding, then stopping in some of the used clothing stores to find some funky shit, then maybe getting a beer somewhere, then maybe firing up the speakers on my bike and dancing in the intersection--just because I can. Fuck yeah!

I've recruited my housemate & freind to bring their Sitar and Tabla to perform at CiclaVia, mobile impromptu style. Any suggestions as to where to setup?

I'll bring the equipment on my trailer and will need 15 minutes to set up. I was thinking about somewhere near McArthur Park at around 1 PM. If would be great if it would coincide with Midnight Ridazz arriving.

Also I thought Santa Monica was hosting a ciclavia event on 10/10/10 too. What happened with that?

There was some confusion with Santa Monica stuff. A group of us in SM were pushing city to do a Ciclovia event, sometime after LA campaign had already started, and originally LA one was for September. We wanted to do the 10/10/10 date, but while we got various levels of support and commitment for the idea within city, they didn't want to put it together as quickly as we were wanting. So 10/10/10 as a date started to dematerialize for Santa Monica around same time CicLAvia LA event moved to 10/10/10.

I think we will get a Ciclovia event in Santa Monica, and will continue to peruse it, and hopefully learn some things from LA event, but for now at least, there is no Ciclovia in Santa Monica.

That sounds kick-ass!

McArthur Park sounds good--lotsa grass and water to refill water bottles, too.

On the south edge of the park (where it borders 7th Street), there will be a CicLAvia pit stop (with the water fill up), Mama's Hot Tamales (cultural institution/shop right across 7th) will have something set up, and likely other stuff too.

We'll most likely be stopping there with the MidDAY Ridazz family/kids ride at some point--to get the kiddies re-hydrated. That would be awesome if all the kids could see what you do.

Perhaps I could get you more detailed information on the day-of as the ride progresses...

This was really, really awesome. I was so impressed. I was a little afraid I would show up and see just a few ridazz strung out along the route. But it turned out there wasn't anywhere I could stand and not see at least a couple hundred bikes in both directions!

I was standing on the sidewalk taking a picture and a girl rode by with this huge grin on her face, and she said "can you believe we're riding in the middle of the street? This is so cool!"

Made my day.

Ciclavia was amazing! My original plan was to blast through the route ITT style, but I woke up too late and there were already a lot of people out by the time I got on course around 11am. That was actually a really good thing because the ride was much better experienced at a slower pace and not in a blur of sweat and pain. I got to laugh, talk to all kinds people, help with a flat, and just take in the whole thing. I'm sure the runners loved it because they could take the whole street like in the marathon. I'll never forget this one guy who was walking down the middle of Spring street with this amazing surreal look on his face. I agree that today the streets were truly open, not closed. Our city needs this at least once a month. I'd like to see it every weekend, but I'm realistic.

It was great but MR has been doing it for the last 4-5 years for a lot less than 200K. Actually for about 200K less.

I don't see the city spending that kind of dough every week or every month.

But here is an idea. Make these streets permanently bike/pedestrians only and it's not going to cost a shitload of dollazz to have all the cops and meter maids corking traffic for you.

Great job guys for pulling it off. Lets make it permanent now.

CicLAvia was amazing. Easily one of, if not the, best bike-riding experience for me personally. I have nothing but praise for the organizers and volunteers. Hopefully we can make this a monthly institution!

I don't think it is realistic to make the route we used today permanently closed to motor vehicles. To be fair, we do have LACM and a ton of other rides all the time that pretty much do the same thing. But today was much, much different than a MR ride. Because it was fully sanctioned by the city it lost the outlaw, confrontational quality and many more people came out. It wasn't just about bikes. There were so many little kids out and I know that they were getting an experience that they would remember for the rest of their lives. There were people out walking their dogs and running in the middle of the streets. I felt an amazing sense of community that was much stronger than what happens at LACM because it wasn't just cyclists. Yes, lets make it permanent for sure. There's no reason it has to cost 200k.

This can be done much cheaper. I'm sure of it.

Right now this is a training for LA to see what it's like for our city to be like this all the time.

We need to keep doing this. Get more people to volunteer, more people to walk and jog, not just ride bikes.

There is an element of DIY that this event can continue in. Get officers to volunteer to work on Sunday to block intersections for free. Deputize citizens who are willing to take on that responsibility to make this event work cost free. Businesses need to realize that if they were open that they would get more business from this event. I was hoping to see more street vendors, and performers all along the routes.

This is an amazingly important event that can heal and strengthen communities by getting out and spending the day together on the streets. It educates the participants as well as the onlookers that it really isn't impossible to make this permanent like Marino believes. We need to believe it. If we do then we can make it happen.

Continue to support this event and encourage the city to make it happen regularly and to consider cutting its cost by finding more volunteers to make it work cost free.

Sure, Midnight Ridazz already does this for free, but CicLAvia really shows those who would never consider what we do to be something they's actually want to start considering to do.

Ride On!

"Instead, a moving crowd that organizers estimated at 100,000 bicyclists, runners, walkers, skateboarders and roller-bladers came out for the city's first CicLAvia — aimed at challenging widely held assumptions about how transit, exercise and the notion of public space play out in this auto-obsessed city."

100,000! I honestly thought it was less. When we were riding I told my friend I estimated 20-30,000 personally. Of course, it's hard to tell with something so decentralized. If the organizers are right, that is downright mindblowing. Regardless, it was a great turn-out and a great event.

Yes. I was truly amazed.

This needs to happen more frequently, over a larger area. And if some infrastructure is built with CicLAvia is mind, it will become cheaper. Get more business on the street involved, more bike racks. This shouldn't cost anything, it should be something the city takes pride in and makes happen.

Had sooooooo much fun at CicLAvia. So many different types of people out there walking, biking, skating, jogging, dancing. Truly awesome to go through the city without cars hogging the road!

Funniest troll comment in the LA Times.

"How about the downtown gyms that stand empty because the people can not get to them? "

I'm convinced most people that comment on the LA Times are the scum of the Earth. There are always such hater comments on that site regardless of the story.

I particularly like the saying:

"Viva CicLAvia"

It's got an appropriately revolutionary tone to it.

4 x a year is not enough, this needs to happen on a weekly basis.

this was completely awesome.... what was great was that it got people out there and even after Ciclavia was done, people were still milling about on their bikes.

There should be a way to do this without shutting down the streets but perhaps by designating a route publicizing it and having bike police patrol it. Much cheaper I'd assume.

Well, they should shut down the streets. It's not that expensive really. Keep in mind that cyclists and motorists both pay the same into the General Tax Fund, the GTF, not vehicle registration, pays for the roads.

And the GTF pays $3,000 per car and only $36.00 per bike. So it's a small thing for cyclists to get a bit of road for a few hours a month or week.

And business actually did better with no cars on the road. Fourteen bikes can fit into one parking spot and the lack of car traffic created a less hostile environment for window shopping and eating out in places that only have one or two parking posts in front of them.
