This ride is a lot of fun. I did it last fall.
And, where else can you see El Borfo at La Bufadora?

Maybe. Also, we could take the train down to SD. And ride through TJ all the way to Rosarito?

I actually took the train down to San Diego earlier this year to see my niece in a Renegade Roller Derby bout. I rode to the Burbank Airport AmTrak stop and picked the train up there. but it stops all over, including other SFV stops, and Union Station in DTLA. The only problem is that each car only has room for four bikes. For my trip it was no worries, but if everyone is headed South of the Border for this ride, it might get crowded. And they don't guarantee bike spots - first come first served. Otherwise, it was a sweet way to get to SD.

They also have a front car that can hold many bikes. I've done this before.

I wonder why the mofos didn't tell me that? I assume you are referring to the Pacific Surfliner? They were all twitch about it saying they couldn't give a guarantee. But like I said, it was a good way to go.

yeah, I was told at the ticket counter that if there was not enough room in the car, the conductors were required to help you put bikes in the luggage car, which is always empty.

That's great to know. I plan on visiting my niece again sometime soon. And then there's this ride next spring.

They also have a bus from San Diego to the start and picks you up at the finish, after the party, for the ride back to SD

When I did it a year ago, they said that was the last ride unless they came up with 4,000 riders. That's their break-even point and apparently they made it so they're continuing the ride. I posted a message before the ride last month asking if anyone was going down for the ride and got no replies.
They're doing it again on April 17th. Crossing the border to come back to the US is a real pain, make sure you have your passport.
There is a bus that goes from Balboa Park in SD down to the start. They pick you up at the finish and bus you back to SD. It costs around $80.
It's a fun ride, 52 miles to Ensenada.

This is a kick ass ride! I would love to do it again. It is super easy to organize as well...
There is tons of politics between the local government and the ride organisers. There is a big security risk due to drug trafficking violence and that is the reason for the organizers teeter tottering on holding it each year.
With the safety issue aside, this is a great ride and a great chance to get some different scenery and go on a memorable cycling trip in another region. Plus the beer is cheap and tacos are a plenty!

@snowcone That sounds like a good plan. $80 sounds kinda steep, no? I'm getting cheap in my old age.

You can take the trolley from downtown SD to Chula Vista near the border and then ride across. I think the ride offers a shuttle bus back to the start from Ensenada for about $20. With the chartered bus for $79, they advertise you can leave your stuff on the bus and have it there at the end of the ride. It leaves from Balboa Park.
I looked at the bus because I was planning on doing the ride alone and don't know my way through Tijuana. I think it would be cool if a group of us went down together and met at the border and then rode the 20 or so miles to Rosarito Beach.

I know that parking lot... it's the last U.S. exit, on the right hand side. And it's a hop and a skip from the border... But can you get in through the turn stiles with a bike? I'd be pissed off if cops tried to take her apart thinking I'm smuggling in more than just skids and wheelies.

going into mexico i don't think it's an issue
i got "randomly" searched
the guy at the border makes you push a button and it either turns green or red and if it's red, you get searched
he didn't do a very thorough job checking my bags and i doubt he would even look at the bicycle
