Paint for bike (DIY)
Thread started by Coe coe buttaa at 07.10.09 - 6:57 pm

Hiyo. I am looking to paint my bike myself.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of paint (auto body?) I should use and where I can find it?
Are there any places where I can get custom mixed paint put into aerosol cans?
Thanks.

reply

rustoleum is nice and thick.. not much color selection though... you can find this at homedepot or lowes.. although its much cheaper at homedepot

If a range of color is what youre looking for, try hitting up a graffiti shop such as 33third on pico, about 1/8th of a mile west of labrea.

They have massive amounts of paint, my favorite (for painting a bike) would be the Tall Montana Platinum cans.. there isn't much of a color palette to those but they have a nice sparkle glitter look to them.

Ironlak is also good and thick, with somewhat of a color palette.

But you should go see for yourself

Any paint with alot of good clearcoat. Autobody paint is what alot of custom framebuilders use and is great... If you have a spray gun.

ironlak looks fuckin awesome as far as colors and coverage, but it chips REALLY easy. i know from experience. if you are gonna go buy paint at 33 and 3rd buy beltons or just stick to rustoleum.

and when you paint your bike, dont cake it on, spray from a distance and do A LOT of layers everytime it dries.

if you want to go just white then you can use epoxy appliance enamel. It does come in spray cans. It is tough stuff. I'm putting it on my bike right now because I've used it on other things, like my helmet(in my picture), and it stood to regular wear and tear (I dropped my helmet a lot) without many scratches and chips.

yeah, i was going to mention staying away from the stock tips (or valves/ nozzles/ whatever the hell they right term for them is) especially with high pressured paint such as rustoleum, as the line may be to skinny making the paint cake up.. well atleast for someone that isn't familiar with the control of spray paint...

I would just go to 33rd. or if you know any graffiti writers, ask them to let you have a rusto fat. Replace that with the stock tip and spray it from a good 5-6 inches away to avoid getting those thick uneven coats

yeah, home depot and lowes. I haven't found any particular type that's especially resistant to chips and scratching, you get over it after a while and just look on it and go "oh well". Besides, whatever color you paint it, you kinda step back and think twice about it later. I've never tried the two part epoxy stuff.

sand everywhere until you get tired, all the nooks and crannies. if you're ambitious, you could sand between coats, I'm not ambitious. If you get down to metal, use primer.

My local Ace Hardware seems to have a good collection of the flatter colors.

the epoxy isn't two part. You use just like any other spray paint and it hardens with a glossy finish.

ooooooooooooooooooooorrrr..... instead of sanding and being tired as hell...

Buy a can of "Graffiti remover" from home depot, costs about 7-8 dollars..

Make sure you take off all chrome or metal pieces off the frame and fork because the graffiti remover will mess it up. Spray it all over the frame and fork. Let it sit and eat up the paint for about an hour, the paint should get to the point that it starts bubbling off the frame. Get some gloves, because if it can eat through paint... i'm sure it wont have a problem doing the same, if not worse with your hands. Get a razor blade and scratch all the loose paint off, everything you can. Then wash off the nasty mess.

WIN!!!!

Krylon Appliance Epoxy is awesome stuff!, but it only comes in Almond, Black and White.

I did my GF's bike in white, and everyone asks if it is powdercoat? Nice smooth hard glossy finish. 2-3 coats and your done!.

SEARS sells it for like $5 a can (get at least 2 cans).

The BEST rattle can paint I have ever used!

If you use paint remover, be sure to sand. Its not necessary to get down to bare metal, just sand to rough up the surface so that the new paint has something to stick/grab onto instead of a smooth slippery surface. In fact if you leave the old paint on there, its an extra layer of paint between the metal and your new paint. And don't mix enamel and lacquer, use one or the other.

You can create even coats with sand paper, a little time and TLC.

I don't know of any places that will mix paint into a can for you. The final clear coat makes it look purdy. have a second pair of eyes so that incase you miss a spot on a coat.

I painted Rambod's fixie for him.Its a good reason to sit around and stare at bikes.

1st off strip your bike down to a bare frame.

CAMOFLAGE !
It's the easiest to do and does not have to be perfect.
easy touch up.

Any rattle can paint job will be second rate.

Lastly make sure you give the paint plenty of time to dry before reassembly.

Yeah that thing is called jasco and heads up to anyone that does use it, be careful with it. I was spraying it on my bike and the wind blew some onto my hand and it burns like a bitch. Luckily nothing serious, but it does get the job done.
also make sure you wipe it up before it dries up because it will be hard to sand off after if you let it dry too much.

YOU PERFECT AND BEST SOLuTION THAT WILL BE FAST AND TAKE A BEATING BUT STILL HOLD UP is

PAINT REMOVER: JASCO PREMIUM PAINT REMOVER
-will remove the paint in mater of minutes make sure to wash after removal use a credit card gift card some thing plastic bendable to remove paint afterwards!

PAINT: RUSTOLEUM PROFFESSIONAL (HIGH PERFORMANCE ENAMEL)
it will hold up extremly strong ive painted my bmx with this and it takes falls and still is holding up! and can take a good scraping and will stay black and wate wont make it rub off un like other paints

CLEAR COAT: RUSTOLEUM WOOD LAQUER...
Its a thicker than clear coat and will look much better and you will only need to apply 1-2 coats of it easly

i work with paint most of my young life so i know a thing or two!

Yeah the paint ball part is just F.U.N.
in reality it will turn white in time and flake off. the paintball 'artist' shooter was hired by the producer from a paint ball company. He says he thought about using clear coat after the paintballs, on his bike, but he wasn't sure how the clear coat would affect the poster paint from the balls. any ideas I'll pass on to him. Myabe try to do my bike before the paint fades!!
I asked & he said he would really finish it off...

"any other tips for self bike painitng appreciated as well. im goin pink again."

Go to Mega Powder Coating out in El Monte and have them do it.

For $60 they did a great job on my frame and fork (that was a group rate, it may be a little bit more now). That includes sandblasting and powdercoating.

They may even have some of the pink powder coat left from when I was in there, so you might not have to wait for them to special order it.
