Start a routine of checking the thrift shops for old 80s and early 90s mtn bikes.
Look for high end models Klein,Fisher,Specialized, etc.
Don't worry about shocks, rigid is better
Sometimes bargains can be had for super cheap $50. to $100.

Rigid with semi-slick will work good in almost any terrain.
Not to much when you feel like the roadie's are whoopin' your ass in an impromptu race, there's always room for a healthy shortcut.

I doubt I could find anything that I would consider rideable in a thrift store honestly.
I can't ride anything lower grade than XTR. doctor's orders.

Just look around and be ready to buy as soon as a good deal comes up. My bud got a great deal on a DH bike for like 200 bucks of some auction site....also try craigslist Orange county and san diego since thats where more of the DH racers are....
