Cyclist visibility at night: Perceived visibility may not match reality

The conclusion, wear enough reflective material that when light hits you, the reflections can be seen from space.

I used to think people were being assholes more to me at night but it turns out they just couldn't see me! I'm rockin' a MiNewt 250 and the brightest rear light I know of. It's also good to have a powerful headlight because it makes retro-reflective road features like signs and dots work for you (awesome in the fog). Speaking of retro-reflective I got it on my shoes, bag, arm warmers, gloves, rear tire, and two stickers on my seatstays. To live and ride in L.A....

always good to see some science posted here, but the study mentions nothing about the visibility of rear lights.

The best rear light I think is the Planet bike superflash.
I've had a motorist following me real slow so i pulled over and waited for his car to pass,he rolls by and smacks his forehead,then says :I thought you were a cop coz of your light...
I frowned at him and replied What makes you think I'm not?
He drives off..
It's fun to mess with them sometimes :D

As for equally bright tail-blinders, I was looking into getting some of those "chicken-coop" light sets that are sold next to the chrome displays down at the Pilot T/S down the street from me.
Hook these bad-boys up to different areas on the seat and watch the fireworks!!!

Also, I've got spare halogen bulbs.
I was going to do a chop job on an old flashlight and mount it under the boom-tube of the V-Rex.
Longer nights means more desert dicks on the road that need to be taught a lesson.

Seriously, it's turned into an S-Fest up here!!!
