I am so fuking pissed!
I went to Barrigans for a margarita tonight, stayed for about 2 hours had my (new) bike locked up outside, right in front of there door (where the security dude stands). Then returned to find my bike with one wheel. ONE FUCKING WHEEL.!!!! I just bought this bike because my last bike was stolen a month ago.
I AM NOT OK WITH THIS!!!!!!!! I rode my other bike back over to barrigans and left it on the corner not locked up and set in the dark across the street waiting for a little fucker to try and jack this one. No luck but I am not giving up. Im going back tomorrow and doing the same thing, lock in hand!

The shit never ends.
Perhaps it's time we started putting more, serious anti-theft devices onto our locked-up steeds.
Sort of like that car-theft deterrent that barbecues the would-be thief, or how Blade's sword has an anti-theft device that slices the fingers off anyone who picks it up by the handle but himself.

apparently one of the thieves is posting on LAfixed too.. im glad i never lock my bike for that long and generally if im riding it somewhere that ill be for a while ill bring it inside... yet again im never on that side of town.

Why do you post your tactics on a public forum, along with your contact info? THINK. Just sayin'. That said, it totally sucks that someone stole from you twice. Also, more and more people have been locking both wheels, as well as their frames.

I dont think it is a huge concern posting my contact info. I also dont think there is a chance that I will ever get my shit back, mostly I just needed to rant. And yes, I getting a cable lock for my wheels as soon as a get a wheel to lock.

Sorry to hear this, that's effed up! This sounds like the work of our "little friends" again. This shit sure is taking the fun out of going places on a bike.
Lock your bikes securely and/or don't let them out your sight.

word u-locks!...Cable locks are easy to cut
we did it at my house once with wire cutters
I always take my wheel off and take it with me inside where ever i am going...i get weird looks though...if you have quick release wheels i suggest the same

Believe it or not bike thieves have been known to be quite clever and will not approach a bike that is suspiciously unlocked... but will rather skip that bike and steal from a bike that looks less like bait. (Locked, but not locked well or not fully locked... like your wheel.) Just a little food for thought.

At 4AM, I was watching an entire episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" that dealt with some young kids being used to jack, "high-dollar" road-bikes and such.
Only in this episode, the ones doing the stealing were winding up dead as a result of "going soft".

another post from lafixed, and while it may not have to do with echo park, the other bike thieves thread is broken for some reason.
Be aware of this guy. He showed up here last
weekend.
Last Sunday he was in Pasadena and rode up to Hector G.
on Green St. and Orange Grove.
According to Hector, Fabian is about 25 years old, 5'
8" and looks Asian and Hispanic. His English is poor. When Hector recognized him
and stopped to pull his phone out, Fabian went nuts and rode against traffic up
Green.

Be aware of this scam.
I was sitting
outside a coffee shop, a guy walked with a pretty nice road bike and asked me if
I could keep an eye on it while he gets coffee.
He comes back out and starts
to ask me about the local riding scene. He tells me he just moved here from
Costa Rica, and is staying just up the road with his uncle, who he tells me owns
a bike shop in Long Beach.
After a while I tell him I have to go. He tells
me he is going the same way and will ride part of the way with me.
Part the
way up, he says he lives right there, and asked me to hold his bike while he
gets his uncle's shop's business card. Comes back saying he forgot the house
key.
Another guy walks up from down the street, and he introduces him to me
as his cousin who lives around the corner. Then asks his cousin to take his bike
and come back with the business card. So now the cousin is gone with the first
guy's bike.
We wait a little, talk bike stuff, he asks to see how light my
bike is, then to hop on it for a spin "right here".
Yes, he rode away with
it.
I didn't want to come across like a jerk. But I guess we should learn to
tell someone that we are not comfortable with other people riding your bike

Also today we
heard…..The same guy stole another bike on
San Vicente with the same scam, and also tried to steal one of a Helens Cycles
customer's bike while that guy was riding. So he is around, even uses the same
name ("Fabian" and speaks w/ poor English).
So
please Beware and let Daniel know if you happen to see his
Bike!

U-lock for the frame and rear wheel + fat cable lock for the front wheel, seat, etc. + immoveable object = reasonably safe bike.
(e.g. look at the stolen bike stories here, see how many of them did that. It's not very many.)

He was wondering how he got there ahead of him. The guy approached him again and started the same old talk. They were stopped at a light I think and once close enough he was able to push the guy off his bike (unclear if he was on the bike or not) and jumped on and rode away. Victim began to chase...then turned around to jump on the junky bike laying on the ground when a pick up truck came speeding by...someone jumped out the bed and picked up the bike and drove off..
he reported the theft and the police have said that there have been 4 similar incidents..."

This sucks, I'm kinda freaked out about locking up these days.
A friend of mine locks up around Silver Lake and Echo Park regularly and has been using two u-locks.
Pitlocks don't grip well enough if you have rear horizontal dropouts, just be careful. Quick releases and track nuts only.

Please everyone use at least one good u-lock, maybe in combination with a cable or another u-lock.
A cable by itself can be cut by bolt cutters in about five seconds.

We should set up a bunch of stings.
So many that these fuckers will be afraid to even look at a bike that's not theirs.
When defeating these misguided fucks we need to use all means available. Locks, marking parts, catching thieves, cracking down on any shop that gets caught fencing hot bike parts, etc etc.
its and impossible pain to lock down everything of value on a bike we need to shut some fuckers down and make it clear that they'd be much happier trying to boost shit from walmart because the bike scene ain't havin' it.
