i did this one yesterday. theres one steep hill.
we could do it again for number two? we would skip all the places where they are paving and we would be on the street more.
we can do it at night if you want.
if that happens then everyone has to have a light. there are probably 10 streetlights on that entire ride, and they arent until the very end.
I really liked the daylight ride but I am down for a nighttime ride too... seems like a nightime ride would not be as scenic but could still be fun... my vote would be to shcedule it so we can see the sunset at the beach when we get back...

i have a better starting place for the next one. its at cemetary park in ventura. its got a great view and an even better story. we can watch the sunset and enjoy the greenery and then leave after the sun goes out.
ok that last post was a lie. the route is much shorter now. it will be this saturday, the 2nd of december. we will be passing all of these places on the way

on the very last gmap link that i posted up above with the route, you can click a tab on the side to see the elevation. the ride from the beach to ojai is sealevel to 800 feet stretched out over 15 miles.
it seems gnarly when you look at it on a map or whatever, but when youre actually witnessing it firsthand you realize its nothing hard at all.

How are you guys getting to Ventura? I live in Downtown LA. I could drive some people but I don't have a bike rack....I have a CRV so could get maybe 2 bikes in the back...
i cannot personally comment on doing it on a fixie because i have never done it myself. however, this weekend i was paced by a fixie on the bike trail. it was some older looking guy in a jersey that had something to do with santa barbara on it. i figure if he can do it then so can you???
one of these days ill finish building my fixed gear and i can see how the ride is myself.
Ojai sounds great. A nice "idyllic" ride through the countryside. I hope its at a nice idyllic pace. An 800 foot climb doesn't sound too inviting, even though its probably spread over 20 miles. What kind of pace are you guys planning on ? Or is it bop till you drop ?
Can anyone give some directions on how to get to surfers point ? My browser doesn't allow me to zoom in our out of the map, so I can't see the offramp and streets or what town this is in.

take a left on figueroa and surfers point is marked on that map as "promenade park"
OK, I'm sittiin here thinkin this is a beautiful ride but man all these wolfpack turkeys are going to leave me sittin in the dust...well, screw it, I'm goin, anyone else that doesn't mind riding tailgate is more than welcome to join me. I got a truck with a back seat which means there's 6 seatbelts (including mine) and no bike rack in the bed, so let me know if you need a ride. No rida left behind. We can exchange cell #'s beforehand if need be.

this isnt a fast ride, and now im pretty sure im coming down with a chest cold or something, so even if it was a hustle ride, i wouldnt be able to stay up front either.
last week, weather.com said there was a 70% chance of rain on saturday, but as the day gets closer, the percentage has gone down. now its at like 30% with scattered drizzle and thunderstorms on sunday. id say we are safe as milk.
RBI, your original directions were completely accurate. I did a little googling and I got this web site that corroborates your directions perfectly. www.ventura.com/activities/beaches/surferspoint/ If you're headed north on the 101 from Los Angeles you'll take the California exit and make a left and an immidiate right onto Harbor till you hit Figueroa and make a left. The web site will also tell you how to get off if you're southbound on the 101. Enjoy, it will all work out
if the free parking is full and you dont want to pay to park at the end of surfers point, theres a parking garage on the corner of california and thompson. all you do is take a right when you get off the freeway instead of a left and you can ride your bike to the point.
The tailgate position was a reference to my ride spot in the group going down the path to Ojai. This particular geezer is beginning to realize his limitations, or lack of ride time, whatever.
Anyway, its all downhill from Ojai.

Yeah! Excellent ride . . . so glad we made the trip. Just got done cleaning the grime off our bikes, but well worth it. Looking forward to the next one.

its another shitty bontrager one, but its alot firmer and it has a buttgroove in it. i havent ridden it since because it started raining cats and dogs around 5 and i dont want to ride in a poodle. har har.
Great tour, ruined. Any good tour guide provides detailed interpretive information and you went above and beyond. I could picture in my mind the chase scenes you were describing in the places they were shot from Smokey and The Bandit. The local lore was really cool too, even when we cut through tweekville and that dude with the pinpoint pupils rambled incoherently at us.
Did the Trek dealermake good on a warranty for your saddle?

the guy at the trek store that i talked to was the guy that actually sold me the bike and he hooked me up within 30 seconds of walking through the door. the warranty is good on any broken part within the first year. he was shocked that it broke like that so soon. he said his broke the same way, but that was after three years of riding and not three months. then i told him about my busted cassette that i replaced last month and i think he wanted to try to sell me a better bike...

RBI, that trail I was trying to think of was The Gridley Trail. I took the long way home back up through Ojai and Santa Paula. Before the twisty hill, there is a road named Gridley Road and it jarred my memory.
