Hi All

As many of you who have attended Ridazz summit know, we are engaging in a 3 step action plan to get better protection for vulnerable road users (cyclists and pedestrians ) from the LAPD, the City Council, and the District and City Attorney.

First up is the public comment period at the Police Commission. We need bodies there. I know it's early and a pain in the ass... but that's how the city works. At the police commission we will be showing up and designating 4-5 speakers to ASK the LAPD for items that they can actually give us.

Here are the official "asks" that I have outlined so far:

1. Police must elevate the status of hit and run traffic crimes against vulnerable road users (cyclists and pedestrians) to that of assault or of equal urgency no matter the severity of injury. Hit and run is tantamount to assault and robbery since the driver is leaving the victim with hospital bills. Essentially it is stealing.

2. If evidence is gathered after hit and run crime, license plate especially, a run on the plate must be done within minutes / hour of the incident being reported, cruiser must be deployed to owners residence, if not in LAPD jusridiction then notify local/appropriate police authority.

3. The driver excuse "I didn't see them" is an admission of guilt NOT a reason to excuse especially if pedestrians are hit in a legal crosswalk (marked or unmarked)
If collision results in death or serious injury driver must be arrested at the scene. If no serious injury driver must receive citation regardless. Speed tests must be done to determine if additional citations are to be assessed. If crosswalk is a SRTS (yellow paint) then citation for speeding in school zone should also apply.

4. Speed limits MUST be enforced through all means possible. If radar not option due to 85th percentile law then old school methods must be used. I made a request of sgt Krumer to inform me of all available methods of speed enforcement to LAPD aside from radar, waiting to hear back will include.


I will be refining the asks, so thoughts on these would be great. Remember, we are asking for things that the LAPD has the power to do right now. We will be approaching the City Council in the next month or two with asks that they can address.
